We stayed in the Aarajura Guesthouse for two nights in June. We had a family room to sleep three (one adult and two children) with an ensuite bathroom. The room was on the second floor and had a bay window that looked onto the street. We were awoken several times the first night by the street noise. As for the room, it felt a bit run down. The main bed, a four poster, was lumpy. There was a dead bug underneath one of the pillows. The two chair beds were board-like and no top sheets were provided. The bathroom was clean, but a disaster. There were no towel bars and no place to put anything atop the tiny sink. We used the hangers in the wardrobe to hang up the wet towels on the arms of chairs. We received one small round bar of soap for use in both the sink and the shower. The toilet was possessed and flushed irregularly. The shower was quite dangerous as it fluctuated from icey cold to scalding hot.
The service was poor. We had a few dishes in the room from our first night. They were not picked up by the cleaning staff the next day. Indeed, it appeared that the only "cleaning" that occured was to pull the sheets up on the bed burying whatever was on the bed underneath. No clean towels, no new soap, no taking out the trash, nothing.
The breakfast was OK. However, the service again was slow. I noticed a sign that said that the guesthouse would not hold luggage after checkout and that guests could store their luggage for the day at a locker in the train station.
Finally, take the bus. While the owner told us that we could walk to the Old Town portion of Edinburgh, the walk is quite long and a bit confusing. There is a bus stop just a few doors down from the guesthouse and the bus drivers are very helpful.
