This is a small B&B located not far from the Haymarket area. It is on a quite street lined with numerous other B&B's and was obviously a residential area in bygone days. It is charming and homey and the owners, a family from Lithuania, will do anything to make your stay enjoyable. They are renovating the guest rooms one by one so the luck of the draw determines if you are lucky enough to get a room with a new 4 poster bed, duvet, fireplace, flat screen TV & satellite and a new bathroom or one of the older rooms with small TV using an antennae and old beds and bathrooms. We spent the first night in their oldest and smallest room but they told us apologizing all the while for the room that they would gladly move us the next morning when the guests checked out of a new room and they did!!! They even moved our luggage for us. There is no elevator and you may have to walk up three flights of stairs, but they carry your baggage for you. there are rooms on the ground and first floor that you can request.
they are extremely solicitous and will even prepare your breakfast earlier than posted hours if you need to leave early on a tour etc. "Mom" makes the greatest scrambled eggs and will cook them to your liking. If you tell them when you will need a taxi, one will be waiting at the door for you. Security is excellent- the front door is kept locked and only the guests have a key. Non-guests must ring a bell and be admitted by the owners.
After spending 10 days in sterile hotels, the Lairg was a welcome treasure and we wish we could have stayed longer. The owners will treat you like one of their family. The main negative is that the nearest restaurants are about a 10-15 minute walk or a short taxi ride. It is about a 20 minute brisk walk to Princes Street. Taxis are not expensive and the drivers are very friendly and won't rip you off.
We strongly recommend the Lairg for couples or singles looking for a quaint, charming, friendly, top service place to stay. I would not recommend it for children especially younger children.
