I went to Edinburgh to visit my daughter who is doing her jr. semester at college at U of Edinburgh and asked for a recommendation of a good place to stay nearby from a professor there. Thankfully they gave me the Southside Guesthouse's name and as soon as I wrote, I began having a great experience as the owners, Franco and Lynne are delightful, helpful, and sweet. I've never written a travel review before (though I am a journalist and write books), but this place was so special I told them that I would like to review it and they told me about your website. The rooms I had were beautiful and so comfortable. The shower had amazing water pressure and tons of hot water. All kinds of herbal teas and delicious Scottish cookies in the room. (I moved once due to my dates and a few days I went away, when they kindly rented out the room that I had actually reserved so I wouldn't have to pay for it during my travels to Isle of Skye (which I also recommend highly especially if you don't want luxury (we stayed in a hostel) and like to be with young people from all over the world on MacBackers.com an amazing trip). The breakfasts were absolutely scrumptious...the best fruit I've had other than in California....and my vegetarian breakfasts with fried bananas and mushrooms and tomatoes and great bread and poached egg and sometimes delicious bacon, were amazing. So much to choose from each day. Lynne and Franco were so welcoming and helpful in every possible way, and really terrific people. I felt like it became a home for me during my week there, and when I returned from Skye, it felt so great to be back. The other guests were friendly. My only wish would have been that there was a communal table for single travelers, but we all wound up talking most of the time anyway.
A great choice. A l5 minute wonderful walk to the Royal Mile, with much to see and do on the way to the castle, palace, etc. Or a 3-5 minute bus ride (right in front and just a half block away)....Bank, internet cafe, great cafe (metropole), and a good pub (Abbey) within one block.

Southside is a large Victorian house situated on a fairly busy road about a mile from the centre of the city.
The interior is tastefully decorated, in good condition and in keeping with the style of the building.
The interior was pleasantly warm during a cold wet spell when we stayed.
Our bedroom was typical of a large bedroom associated with this style of house. A section of the room has been converted to provide a fairly small shower, wash basin and W.C. and whilst quite adequate, it is not as spacious as a typical 3* hotel bathroom would be.
The beds were comfortable and good storage space provided together with tea/coffee making facilities hair drier etc.
The only less than good aspect of the room was the intermittent sound of a water pump somewhere within the building, that tended to disturb the early morning slumber.
The breakfast was served in a pleasant room at the front of the building, its content and quality was very good and a reasonable (uk) choice was offered. The food was well prepared and well presented and served.
The owners were intent on providing a professional service and this was successfully maintained.
Within a few hundred metres of the guest house were several restaurants that would provide a guest with a choice of evening meals.
The centre of the city was about a 15-20 minutes walk which could be done via quiet roads and parks or public transport taken from the main road outside the guest house.

  • Liked — Food and service, location, interior fabric.
  • Disliked — cramped bathroom, an itermittent "pump" sounding during the waking hour.

Stayed here for the bank holiday weekend whilst visting the Fringe festival. As soon as you walk in the front door, you know you are in no ordinary B&B or guesthouse. The attention to detail in the decor and the fact that everything looks brand new - and this is only the communal areas. The double room we had was equally as lovely; good size; large bathroom with powerful shower; brand new bedding. Breakfast (incl. Buck's fizz if you fancy it!) served by a smiling Franco was a delight each morning...lots of choice, very fresh etc. Location - about a 10/15 mins walk into the Old Town along one road. Jaunt up to Arthur's Seat very easy as its close by. I love Edinburgh anyway, and now have the perfect place to stay everytime we go. Have already recommended this place to friends.

As it was my wife and I's 1st wedding anniversary we wanted to go somewhere special and we can both say Southside is special!

Perfect for a weekend or a week (we stayed a week and loved it), suitable for couples young or old looking for a lush, peaceful environment (there are only 8 rooms I think) with which to see Edinburgh from or just to relax in.

It is in a good location on Newington Road, quite literally all you need to do is get the Airlink bus from Edinburgh airport to Waverly Bridge (you can book this as an open-ended return ticket) and then you can get a black taxi from opposite side of road to it (about 5-10mins, costs about £4.50), or instead of a taxi get a 33/33a bus (there are others) on Princes Street which will take you to it with a bus stop directly opposite the Southside at the Reverie bar (and a bus stop going into town just up from the southside), simple!

Also one of the great things about it is that is only a 20 min walk from Prince's Street and is close to the Salisbury Crags/Arthur's seat for those of you who like to get 'out-and-about'.

Regarding the aesthetics of the guesthouse, lush is one word to use. The rooms are very well presented, with ensuites and lovely complimentary shampoo/shower gel/handwash (not mentioning the array of teas/coffee/hot chocolate you get!).

A nice extra feature is that the rooms have tv/dvd combos with, wait for it, their own mini-dvd/book library on the 1st floor which is great for those who just want a relaxing break, or who have shopped too much!

The food for breakfast is simply delicious (lots of it is organic), with a continental starter and cooked breakfast for main (there are also specials and a vegetarian grill option, my favourite was the mini-haggis...tasty!).

Highest compliments to Lynne and Franco as they are very nice people and you can tell they care that their guests have a wonderful stay.

I have already recommended the Southside to friends and family and I would recommend it to you...

...Enjoy!

Having just read some of the recent reviews about this exceptional Guest House, I can say with hand on heart that they accurately describe what Southside is all about. We have just had three days there and wish we could have stayed longer. Lynn and Franco are exceptional hosts giving you the confidence that nothing will be a problem. The rooms are well eqipped, tastefully decorated and very clean. The breakfast is gorgeous and the location ideal for easy access to the centre of this imposing city. We will return. Thank you to you to you both. Nat and Ady
