As it was my wife and I's 1st wedding anniversary we wanted to go somewhere special and we can both say Southside is special!
Perfect for a weekend or a week (we stayed a week and loved it), suitable for couples young or old looking for a lush, peaceful environment (there are only 8 rooms I think) with which to see Edinburgh from or just to relax in.
It is in a good location on Newington Road, quite literally all you need to do is get the Airlink bus from Edinburgh airport to Waverly Bridge (you can book this as an open-ended return ticket) and then you can get a black taxi from opposite side of road to it (about 5-10mins, costs about £4.50), or instead of a taxi get a 33/33a bus (there are others) on Princes Street which will take you to it with a bus stop directly opposite the Southside at the Reverie bar (and a bus stop going into town just up from the southside), simple!
Also one of the great things about it is that is only a 20 min walk from Prince's Street and is close to the Salisbury Crags/Arthur's seat for those of you who like to get 'out-and-about'.
Regarding the aesthetics of the guesthouse, lush is one word to use. The rooms are very well presented, with ensuites and lovely complimentary shampoo/shower gel/handwash (not mentioning the array of teas/coffee/hot chocolate you get!).
A nice extra feature is that the rooms have tv/dvd combos with, wait for it, their own mini-dvd/book library on the 1st floor which is great for those who just want a relaxing break, or who have shopped too much!
The food for breakfast is simply delicious (lots of it is organic), with a continental starter and cooked breakfast for main (there are also specials and a vegetarian grill option, my favourite was the mini-haggis...tasty!).
Highest compliments to Lynne and Franco as they are very nice people and you can tell they care that their guests have a wonderful stay.
I have already recommended the Southside to friends and family and I would recommend it to you...
...Enjoy!
