My brother and I stayed at Southside Guest House for 3 nights during our Easter holidays and loved every minute of our stay. We read reviews for dozens of B&Bs on the Trip Advisor website before choosing Southside. We knew we wanted to stay somewhere clean, with easy access to the city centre and that served a delicious breakfast. Southside met all of those requirements and more. Our room was the green and white twin bedroom. The room was decorated very nicely, the beds were super comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. In the room was a small tv with dvd player. There is a library area that has a dvd collection for guests to borrow from.
Franco and Lynne were terrific hosts. We had a whole list of things we wanted to do while in Edinburgh and Franco and Lynne were able to answer all of our questions about how to get places and even gave suggestions about other things we might want to do.
It was extremely easy to get from Southside to the tourist areas. While the guest house is within walking distance (15-20mins), we opted to take the public bus back and forth every day. The bus stop is only 1 block away and you can purchase an all-day ticket (where you can ride any bus as many times as you like) for 2.50 GBP. This was good for us because typically we'd go sightsee for the day, come back and take a nap in the early evening, then ride the bus back into the city centre to eat dinner and then come home. Buses come by very frequently all day long. We typically waited less than 5 minutes for a bus. And like the London tube, bus stops in Edinburgh have helpful screens that tell you how long before the next bus is due to arrive!
The best part of our stay was breakfast every morning. It was really delicious! And we're not just saying so - we live in NYC and eat out for breakfast/brunch all the time. Every morning there is a cold buffet laid out with orange & cranberry juice, bread, cheese, oatcakes, some kind of bakery item (one day it was chocolate brioche, another day it was mini chocolate chip muffins), fresh fruit salad, cereal and yogurt. On top of that they offer you tea, coffee, cappucino, latte, hot chocolate. You can have oatmeal porridge - which was our favorite thing (it came with cream and syrup) - and toast as a first course. Second course involved eggs (prepared any way you like) and lots of different sides (baked beans, fried bananas, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, tomato). There is also a special each day. We stuffed ourselves silly every morning. And every night before bed we would talk about what we wanted to eat for breakfast the next morning.
We can't wait to come back next time we're in Scotland and bring the rest of our family. We know they'll love it there too!
