The Glenallan Guest House (Now Known As The Cresent) (19 Mayfield Road, Edinburgh)
Arrived there at Midday, had to ring the doorbell for about 10 minutes before someone came and answered. We were greeted by a young woman in her Dressing gown and PJ's.
Upon arrival we were told that we couldnt check in until 3pm.
Rooms were nice looking, although we had booked a double and got a twin instead.
There was no meat at breakfast but it was advertised on the website as serving "full Scottish breakfast" there may have been religious or moral grounds for not serving meat but that's no excuse.
We were charged an extra 4.9% for using a debit/credit card to pay for our stay, which is not advertised until you read the "welcome" sheet in your room.
Electrical appliances in the rooms (TV, Iron, Hairdryer, Digi-Box) had not passed electrical safety tests since 2010 and were past their next service due dates.
The iron had a bare live wire, and was full of limescale
Toilet did not flush properly
Shower was a decent size but could've been a bit bigger.
Service was non-existent, No-one was around when you needed something, and when you did ask for something it was as if you had asked for one of their kidneys or something.
There was no Television remote in the room, "remotes can be obtained from reception for £20 refundable deposit" do they think people want to steal the controls?
The deposit i gave them for a remote had been spent by them, so when i went to collect it and return the remote, they didn't have it. So i had to get them to refund it to my card, which i wasn't happy about.
If you don't know how to run a hotel... then you shouldn't be running one.
This hotel really ruined my visit to my country's capitol city, I'll be staying well clear of 19 Mayfield road in the future and I will advise others to do the same.

Room Tip: Stay clear of the top floor rooms.

We arrived without booking, were made to feel very welcome, and greeted with a smile. The room was excellent, well appointed, and very clean and comfortable. When we travel to Edinburgh again, we would certainly stay at the Glenallan, and would have no hesitation in recommending it to friends and family.

Room Tip: Has an off street parking area

Just back from Edinborough and we stayed in the Glenallen for 2 nights (its too long a story) but anyway I would agree with most of the other travellers who stayed there. Rooms were nice on this occasion and in fairness we were put up at short notice having been given the runaround by another hotel group. Scottish breakfast was charming to say the least without the meat although it was advertised. A smile costs nothing and a simple hello you are welcome and goodbye we hope you enjoyed your stay wouldn't go amiss either and inform people of your style or lack of it of cooking either.

Unlike the other reviews we found this place very nice! The rooms are spacious, well decorated beautiful set, bathrooms renovated, the house prepared breakfast, warm welcome, the owners friendly, smiling and ready to give all possible services, the location off, even though in the neighborhood all beds years breakfasts, which allows for quiet nights and relaxing, and the price honest for services. We warmly recommend this establishment.

Although the location is good, and the house clean, the staff are lazy and rude and clearly do not wish to have guests in their guest house. They just want to take your money and do nothing!! first of all they tried to over charge us as we'd paid a deposit - they tried to charge us the whole amount. The room was not ready when we arrived with no loo roll, or tea and coffee. We were informed that breakfast was extra at £6.50 pp per day - the first guest house I have ever stayed in where bed and breakfast does not mean just that. They never made our room up until i asked them to. So upon returning at 4 or 5pm each day the room was as we'd left it. In summary the service was non existent and i would not recommend this guest house.

We booked two rooms for 2 nights, on arrival was told a leak so couldnt stay there they put us into one of their other guesthouses which was dirty with only 1 bathroom for 13 guests, breakfast was disgusting stale toast and cheap muesli
they didnt answer phone for pick up, they moved us again the next day to another hostel which was smaller and squeezed four of us into a double room by adding stretchers and claiming that is 4 beds plus the room wasnt ready till 7pm that night when we had booked for 2 nights and had to move our own stuff between the houses as they were too busy to give us a ride although night before said they would pick us up anytime
the second morning they kept changing the time we had to go to breakfast,
the rooms smelt and our shower door was broken,
overall horrible service they were not local and didnt know anything DONT STAY HERE or at Carlton House!

DO not stay here if you can avoid it!! Not worth the money at all!!
Please take note that i did see the reviews but thought it would be worth the try but it is not!
The main problem with this accommodation is the staff- they are unhelpful and rude. When we arrived to check into our room for the long weekend they took our money fairly quickly saying to have a seat and a car would be here in a minute. After about 5 mins we enquired exactly what was meant by that and we were informed that the rooms that we had booked had a leak but they had found us accommodation elsewhere. We went along with it and after about 30mins of waiting were taking to another guesthouse where the staff were a little nicer but told that we would have to check out in the morning and move again. On the next morning we rang for the pick up they offered, but no-one came. When we finally arrived we were told there was not a room for us until later and we may have to be split up into different places. When we returned later the rooms at 6pm they still were not ready and when we finally complained about the treatment we were told we were lucky they did anything for us at all. The staff were not helpful or apologetic at all throughout the whole weekend, instead making us feel they were the ones at fault.
The one of the rooms that they finally gave us was a double into which they tried to cramp another two fold away beds. After further complaining about this they said this was always how they made a four bed room.
Finally do no expect the room descriptions to be accurate because according to the guesthouse they are all different and it is just you who makes the assumption that when you book a four bed with en-suite that you actually get four beds and an ensuite!
DO NOT STAY HERE!
