“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

Stayed here in April, wanted to add my support to the very many positive reviews that this hotel rightfully receives.

Much time and thought have clearly been invested in building the aesthetic of the place over a number of years. In the bar and restaurant areas there is something new and interesting to look at - new quirks of design emerge each time you take a look. They are great places to begin and end the day.

The rooms are great, well appointed and spotlessly clean.I'm not sure I agree with the comment about it being a little way from the centre - it really isn't that far.

Service is extremely attentive and the welcome very warm. The owners have this down to a fine art - always on hand but never invasive or overbearing. They were great.

The dog is the most laid-back, chilled-out creature ever invented - Bob Marley with paws. Nothing fazes him/her and he/she certainly will not be jumping on your lap and trying to nick your sausage at breakfast. Far too cool for that, me thinks. A great mascot for the place.

I'd go back there, and plan to.

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for your Sparkling Review of our Hotel, and thanks for noticing all our little quirky designs, Annette leaves me to dream up all the Big and the Little renovations that we have made over the last 14 years and having been an Electrician for 45 years in the Building Industry I spend a lot of my time thinking of our next changes and how we can improve what we offer to our Guests.
Annette for her part is the finishing designer, colours, coatings and the fabrics (amongst the other 1,000 jobs she does) used so that all the common areas have a certain feel to them whilst all the Bedrooms are decorated differently with their own aesthetics.

Being a Hotel there is always improvements that can be made except to our Golden Retriever Dog Keilidh, as you have pointed out she is certainly Laid Back like Bob Marley, so therefore we are teaching her to bark in time with Opera and will soon change her name but not to Bob Marley and Me but to

Placid Dog Dogmingo, Ha Ha ha ha ha..

Stayed for Fringe , (ideal - 15 min walk to Pleasance etc), booked the single room, clean, comfortable and spotless bathroom. Good to see owners working hard to make their hotel the best. Excellent welcome notes etc.
Great breakfast, highly recommended. Many thanks.

We stayed at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia for two weeks in July this year (2013). We had a fantastic stay! Our accommodations were roomy, comfortable, and quiet. We liked the location – close to bus service and yet tucked away in a quiet residential area where we could get away from the hustle bustle when we wanted to.

The proprietors – Max and Annette – were great hosts! They took care of every little detail. Lots of guests came and went over the period of our two week stay. I saw only satisfied guests the whole time we were there. Everyone was treated as though special.
The staff is like family. Helpful and kind. The breakfast was over the top! Not just a buffet but order as you like, fresh from the kitchen.

I hope we get to return to Edinburgh someday. We had a great trip and Hotel Ceilidh-Donia and the staff there were a big part of our fun and adventure. If we do get to return - we'll be back!

Many Moons of thanks for a Glorious review, we do not often have Travellers staying for two weeks and so it is with great pleasure for us that you enjoyed your stay, a two week period leaves a lot of time for things to go bump in the night because we like probable most other Small Hotels have wheels falling off the Wagon from time to time so to speak and I am delighted that you had a smooth ride when you were here.

We are lucky in this Wee Edinburgh Hotel in that the Cook and our two Head of Cleaning Staff have all been with us for the 14 years that we have owned this Hotel, and all the other part timers are Family and the friends of the family, so the hotel Ceilidh-Donia is truly a Family Run Hotel and our Staff will go out of their way to help, and as we say in this Hotel, H2H, Happy 2 Help..

I see you said that you will be Bach; ok can I be Beethoven then, tee hee hee..

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Stayed for 3 nights in early August 2013 as part of a trip through Europe with friends.

Location: The hotel is situated a bit south of the main center of Edinburgh, but it is easily reachable by bus (or if you prefer, about a 20-30 minute walk, which we did one day and it didn't feel tiring at all). The advantage of this location is that it is in a quiet neighborhood, and you almost feel like you're in the suburbs despite being inside a city. Within walking distance are some food options, but you can always take the bus, which costs a pound and a half, to go into the city, and these come by pretty frequently. Late night, taxis aren't a bad option either, especially if there's more than one of you. It's about 6-7 pounds for a ride from town, and all the cab drivers knows this place just based on the street.

Rooms: A bit smaller than your typical American hotel room, but let's be honest, you're not vacationing to spend a bunch of time inside a hotel room. You'll be able to get a good night's sleep, and clean yourself easily in the fully stocked bathrooms. If you have issues with climbing stairs, see if you can get a lower floor room because there aren't any elevators, but we had no issues hauling our bags up.

Breakfast: Hands down best breakfast offered by any hotels I've ever stayed at. It's basically like going to a nice restaurant, and you get to choose from a very extensive menu of options. The breakfast is typically included, and well worth getting up for. We did party fairly late for 2 of the nights, so we only got to experience the breakfast once, but it was awesome. They will also pack you a to-go option if you have to go out early. Very flexible.

Service: Very friendly folks running the hotel, and they are more than happy to give you recommendations or even just have a nice friendly chat. These guys put their hearts into making your stay comfortable and it truly shows.

I highly recommend staying at Hotel Ceilidh-Donia (which I still have a hard time pronouncing) for your exploration of Edinburgh.

Many moons of thanks for a glowing review of our Hotel.. The Buses and Taxis are really quick and cheap to get into Town from our quiet location, 10 mins by Bus and 5 mins by Taxi and yes as you have pointed out all our rooms are of different sizes but we do charge the same rate so its pot luck really which room you get but they are all have the same facilities and are equally stocked with everything you will need whilst here on your Holiday.

So many people have told us that they enjoy our Breakfasts that it made us think why, we think it is simply that we offer Two Hours over Breakfast time so that our Guests are not hurried in and out, after all it is you that are on Holiday, also having a good choice of options to get the old juices going and then having your Breakie freshly cooked with locally produced ingredients, hhmm, so what is there not to like.

Annette and Janet cook the breakfasts and truly take pride on the presentation and getting everything cooked just right, although at peak times it can be hard for them sometimes to keep up, but hey-ho we are not a Fast Food outlet..

This was my 15th Edinburgh Festival but the first at this Hotel. I loved my trip as did my wife and friends who also stayed. Great atmosphere and very well presented Hotel. During my stay it was mainly occupied by middle aged overseas couples some of which were on a small tour group. The Hotel was very quiet both from within and from without which is unusual during the Festival ! Very handy for the Lothian road bus routes and in 6 days I never waited more than 5 minutes for a bus in any direction. Remember £3.50 in cash gets you an all day ticket. Breakfast was very good and I look forward to coming back.

Room Tip: I was in a room on the back of the house which just has gardens behind.

Many Moons of Thanks for a lovely review, 15 times to the Edinburgh Festivals, Wow-Wee! That is certainly serious commitment to the World’s largest Festivals. I am Born and Raised in Edinburgh and all my Life I have loved the warm and beautiful atmosphere created during these three gorgeous weeks in August..

Our quiet neighbourhood location is also a big bonus after the hussle and bussle of a hectic day up Town and well served by L.R.T Buses, for a cost of just £3.50 you can travel anywhere and all day on these Buses and if you download their app you won’t miss your Bus or be short of Information..

We stayed here on a recent visit to Edinburgh. The owners were fabulous and very helpful. The rooms are small, but very clean. The beds were the worst part of our whole stay. It was hard to sleep through the night because they were so uncomfortable and the pillows were old and smelled horrible. Dalkeith Road is a very quiet area. If you want to feel the energy of the city center I wouldn't recommend staying at the bed and breakfasts in this area.

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, I see we hit the spot as far as hospitality and cleanliness were concerned but somehow you thought that our Beds were uncomfortable and our Pillows were smelly, I find that hard to believe as Anne and Jill run a tight ship as far as Beds and Linen are concerned, they have taken care over 14 years to evolve a system that incorporates new staff. During the summer months when we employ extra staff who are usually Students and are normally friends of friends or friends of family.

It would have been very helpful to us as the Owners of The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia if you had told us of your disappointments when you were staying with us as it is impossible to bolt the door after the Horse is gone, so to speak.

Beds are Beds and as always it is a very Subjective issue and not an Objective issue, our Beds have come from the same supplier for almost 25 years now and are of a high standard, in effect our Beds Mattresses and pillows are the same but unfortunately People are not and if you had told us of your sleeping problems and other issues then at least we may have been able sort everything out for you..

Booked fairly last minute for `The Fringe` and was delighted with the high standard of comfort.
Good situation -about 15 mins walk-for `Venue 33`-The Pleasance Courtyard- where there was plenty going on.
Large, beautifully clean bedroom with everything you might need, and delicious home cooked breakfast.
Good shower too!

Room Tip: On the ground floor you may be woken by people coming and going.

Many Moons of thanks for a terrific review, and yes we are a great Location during the World’s Largest Combined Arts, Comedy and Music Festivals, The Edinburgh Festivals. We are as you found out a 15 min walk to the Pleasance area and we are also just 20 mins walk away from the Udderbelly, Underbelly and the Gilded Balloon.
