Three of us stayed in one of the basement rooms, which had a double bed, and a sectional sofa. Beds had comforters, instead of just sheets & blankets. Room had a large window that opened to the front street, with blackout curtains for sleeping in late or privacy. Was great for fresh air and was not noisy at all.
We had our set of color-coded keys, and could come and go as we pleased.
The room also had an LCD television, with a large selection of DVDs to choose from, upstairs. This was good for us, as we are not night owls and were definitely ready for bedrest by 10:30 each night, after walking the hills of Edinburgh all day. WiFi did not work for our ancient G3 iBook in the room, but signal was fine right outside the room, in a comfortable sitting area. the desktop upstairs was also available and was only in use once when we wanted to use it, in five days.
The breakfasts were wholesome with a wide choice. Fresh fruit was available every morning, with a buffet of juice, cereals, muesli, yogurt, good English toast (never knew that toast bread could be so different from our whipped air bread). The cooked portion was delicious and the dining room is bright and cheerful, as are the hosts.
Many other reviews speak to the charms of Gareth, so I will not go into detail except to say that they are all true. Gareth's mother, Heather, who does weekend duty, is a spry, energetic, wonderfully personable soul, but is definitely not a stereotypical English "Mum". She battles busses and cabbies uphill both ways on her kamikaze bicycle, taught karate for years and years, and to add wonderment to dazzle, holds a PhD and runs a molecular biology research lab in her spare time. If for no other reason, one should visit the Fraoch House just to see a role model to emulate as we go "over the hill".
Finally, "fraoch" is Gaelic for heather, so Gareth's B&B is actually Heather's House. We can offer nothing but praise for a great B&B run successfully by a nice son who respects his lovely mother. You will not be disappointed.
