“Good for a number of reasons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

I was on the quiet side of the hotel so I had no view, beyond the back of terraces, but I quite like that. A bit of something whirrs below but better than the street on the other side which is mega busy.
I like it because the guy on reception sorted out for me to keep the same room when I had to extend a couple of nights.
The breakfast buffet is good, busy but good selection and polite staff.
I was working and the cleaner came in and did the room while I was there at my reques.
I dont know it was a nice straight forward visit, as always the staff make the difference.

Room Tip: Backside of hotel for peace and quiet

We stayed here for two nights, on a leisure trip to Edinburgh. I'm not sure where Holiday Inn Express pitches itself in the hotel market. I tend to use Premier Inn as a benchmark for budget hotels; I think they offer good value and quality without aspiring to luxury. Instinctively I'd say Holiday Inn Express pitches in a similar market but aspires for a slightly higher end product, and this hotel fails to meet that aspiration; it is slightly below what I would expect from a Premier Inn.

The room we were allocated was clean, the en-suite was modern and perfectly adequate. The service from staff was very good. The location of the hotel is excellent, but I knew this before booking, so I don't credit this to the hotel. The free breakfast is worth having, but not outstanding, and the system for self-service is a bit chaotic.

The fixtures and fittings in the room are a bit spartan and, as one or two other reviewers have identified, the noise transfer to/from adjacent rooms is significant and something that the hotel needs to improve.

We stayed in January and got this hotel at a very reasonable price; if I'd paid the advertised rack rate of £120/night, this would get three stars and not four.

Room Tip: Ask for a room an upper floor (five or six) to minimise street noise.

Stayed two rights with my wife.

We were give a room on -1 floor I guess you could call it. We still had a window to the front of the hotel, but it was below street level. This gave us zero view, but all the street noise. In addition to this, the walls of our room seemed very thin with all the noise from adjacement rooms and the noisy plumbing constantly disturbing our sleep.

To get to our room, we had to go down a small flight of stairs, to the lifts, which then took us to our floor, then we needed to go up another small flight of stairs to get to our room. This was irritating with suitcases.

The room was quite compact, but clean with modern furniture and fittings.

The breakfast was sufficient, but nothing particularly spectacular.

The wifi was free, but I could not use it due to some firewall issues. The business centre in the lobby was not free, which was frustrating.

Not bad, not great either.

Room Tip: Higher floors would have been quieter

We stayed here from Saturday till Monday. the room was spacious, very clean and comfy. when we checked in we were given free WiFi and a late checkout, very helpful staff. the breakfast was lovely, plenty choice and again helpful staff. there was an ice machine next to the reception, which we appreciated very much. overall an excellent stay and we would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: great location for city centre

We booked in advance (about a month) and got a really good rate for this hotel in January. It was very clean and tidy although the room for 3 people was very small and not enough hanging space, no drawers for clothes so any longer than 2 nights and you'd get cabin fever. Had a good TV and shower was powerful. Breakfast the first morning was a bun fight, as its complimentary not a great cooked breakfast but sausage beans and scambled egg was enough to keep you going til lunchtime. Good selection of cereals, danish and croissants but for the size of the hotel not enough seating area for breakfast. We nearly ended up having to take it to our room to eat as several guests did !! so by the time you get to your room your breakfast is cold. For somewhere that has 6 floors a bar area isn't big enough to accommodate that amount of people for breakfast !! Couldn't fault anything else. They stored our luggage for us and staff very pleasant and accomodating. All in all a good experience albeit the breakast fiasco. Would go back if they gave us a bigger room with proper facilities to hang/store clothes. Room was also very warm which isn't a bad thing but the window only opened a tiny bit (Being on the 6th floor !! I can imagine why). Beds were comfy enough and clean linen.

Room Tip: if there is more than two of you ask if they have a slightly bigger room. We overlooked the back of...

Dear Roseanne,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review following on from your recent stay.

We do often have cheaper rates available this time of year so its great you were able to take advantage of them, all our rooms are to the same standard so unfortunatly there are no rooms with extra hanging space, with regards to breakfast I am not sure if you visited our great room on the second floor as this is where breakfast is generally served, the bar is used for the overflow - however I do understand that it can get very busy at peak times and do apologise if you were inconvenienced.

I hope you will return to us on a future occasion and again thank you for your review.

Kind regards,

Gemma Vincent.
