Edinburgh 'Black Cab' drivers are required to have a very substantial knowledge of the city (and surrounding area) and duly need to pass 'the Edinburgh Taxi Brief' - rated second in the UK only to the 'London Knowledge' - before they can earn their Black Cab license. Just tell them where your interests lie, what you want to see, and they will know all the places, (the regular tourists haunts and the 'hidden gems' off the tourist routes) the tourist attractions, restaurants, pubs, hotels, night clubs, boat trips, wildlife areas, etc. etc. Generally, they take great pride in their extensive knowledge and are eager to share this with you.
They're not cheap when compared to the 'hop on, hop off' standard bus tours, but if you are generally interested in knowing the 'real' Edinburgh, they are great value for money.
Please do not confuse the 'Black Cabs' with the Private Hire taxis (minicabs) though, because the latter are not required to pass the same tests and consequently do not have a fraction of the knowledge of the Black Cab drivers.
If you really want to get to know Edinburgh, there is no better resource than the Black Cabs.
