“Cheap, great food, service could be better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012 via mobile

Popped in on a Tuesday lunchtime.

Two courses for £6.95, three for £7.95 from a set menu of 20 or so dishes.

One guy seemed to be running everything upstairs on his own, and was very, very busy... but was doing his best.

Bit of a wait for starters and food, but when it arrived it was very tasty, with large portions.

Would recommend and go again.

“Tiny but tasty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

I visited That Basil three times in three weeks during the Festival this summer. Each time the food has been tasty, service is quick and the price is reasonable. The restaurant is pretty small so sometimes you have to queue for a table, and on one occasion I noticed the owner move a couple onto a smaller table to accommodate our group of 4. Great for us, perhaps not so great for the couple. One night, also, there was a mix-up and an incorrect dish arrived. The manager apologised and the error was quickly remedied. Generally I really like this place for a good Thai dinner, and I'll definitely go back.

“Excellent Curry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

Visited here this week during the festival. The big draw was the special menu of two course for £12.95. Yes of course all the usual suspects were there , it is an authentic Thai restaurant ! Food was marvellous , freshly made and well prepared and presented. Only disappointment was the absence of a wine cooler for our bottle of wine. It wasn't that cold when it arrived and quickly got warm as the place was very busy. Staff were utterly charming and could not be faulted for the service nor manners. If you like Thai food give it a try and judge for yourself .

“must thai harder”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Poped in here with friends and family between frindge shows. The place has a good sized menu but doent offer a great deal more than versions of red and green curries or pad thai. In addition the 2 course special menu offers all the usual suspects (tom yum, spring rolls, tempura veg, red curry, green curry, pad thai, sweet and sour) for $12.50. sadly after ordering things were just dissapointing. over 40 minute wait for starters, ok it was busy but find that a bit unacceptable. tom yum was good. nice amount of spice and al dente veg. Pad thai however was just a pile of brown on my plate. pretty flavourless and lacking any herb, spice or citrus which i would normally associate with this thai staple. On top of this the house red was pretty boggin.

maybe was just an off day but wont be back to find out as the malaysian place up the road is consistantly great.

“Small, but very good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

It's 6.30pm on a manic Festival Fringe Saturday, Edinburgh is packed to the gunnels and we've just been knocked back by Ciaio Roma and Ti Amo when we spot a tiny Thai Restaurant. Is there any point in even asking? Give it a try - 'just give me a minute' says the nice owner, and one minute later we have the best table for two in the place - some are quite close together. Then the doubts creep in - why could we get a table? Is it really bad? Menus and drinks arrive quickly. Food is very tasty and service excellent. Nice place if a little cramped. Often the big drawback in such small restaurants are the toilets but these are downstairs, very clean and spacious. Had a super meal and very reasonably priced too - rounded off a super day. Thank you very much!
