I have recently returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel 2nd&3rd May which was booked for my husband and myself as a present, unfortunately our son didn't check out the reviews before booking, this is a lesson to be learnt.
To begin with we had truoble when trying to book our 2 night stay as every date I gave the owner he said they were fully booked, they did have a room available but we would have to pay an extra £20 per night, I refused to do this saying it had already been paid for and I wasn't prepared to pay more, what dates did they have available, his reply was oh well to keep the lady happy you can have those dates( amazing as they were previously fully booked).
The evening before our arrival the owner phoned me and said would we check in at 4pm as there would be no-one available to check us in earlier, also dinner would be at 6pm, I agreed even though it meant we had to waste time travelling up from Northumberland to arrive there at the alloted time!
We duly arrived at 4pm and as we opened the door there was an overwhelming smell of curry, the reception was very dark and uninviting, we were checked in by an Indian lady who gave me a printed sheet to complete asking for details of my car etc, she also asked for credit card details, when I asked why as the room etc was paid for and I had no intention of having any extra's she told me it was in case of any damage caused, I was also asked for sort code as well as the number, I refused to give this! This lady who I believe to be the mother of the owner told me that breakfast was at 9-30 which I thought to be rather late as by the time we had eaten and got out the day would be half over and we only had Friday in Edinburgh before moving north on Saturday but thought I didn't have a choice.
We were shown to our room no 4, I have to say the room was very clean although small, the shower was clean but the water took some time to get hot.
At 6pm we went to the dining room for the evening meal which I have to say was disappointing to say the least, there was no choice at all, it was tinned vegetable soup, 2 very small pieces of chicken (when I say small I mean about 1and a half inches square), frozen vegetables and a few frozen chips, followed by ice cream OR coffee, they would have been better not including dinner in this offer! I asked about the breakfast time as in the room behind the door was a sign saying breakfast was between 7-30 - 9, and was told we could have breakfast at 8-15, the owner also made a point of telling us that people put things on tripadvisor to mislead clients, believe me I am not doing that but why mention it in the first place.
As my husband and I were getting ready for bed about 10pm we sat on the end of the bed (the mattress, not the bed end ) and it collapsed, the bed end fell off, my husband went to speak to the owner but the dining room door was locked, we thought we would have to sleep on the floor, he actually must have heard someone trying the door and shouted up the stairs, when we told him what had happened he said he would come and fix it, about 5 minutes later he rang me to say we had to wait half an hour then go down and we would be given a bigger room, another 10 minutes passed and he rang again and said come down now, we did this and were given another room which was very good as they were supposed to be fully booked, this room No 3 was infact smaller but clean and at least the bed didn't collapse!
The following morning we went for breakfast expecting to see other clients only to find no-one only ourselves, we were given coffee, and cooked breakfast consisting of the most disgusting sausage I have ever tasted in my life, it was soft, squelshy and tasteless, with it was a few beans, a fried egg and 1 slice of toast with a portion of spread, no juice, ceriel or more toast was offered, I have since read on other peoples comments if you ask for cooked breakfast you cannot have the juice etc. Breakfast should be a relaxing start to a day, we ate and left rather quickly, there was no reason to stay.
The owner phoned me during the day while I was out to say breakfast would be at 9am the next day, I told him we had a long drive north the following day but he insisted on 9am, the breakfast was again instantly forgettable, we actaully wished we had gone down the road to the Toby and had a buffet breakfast for £3-99. When we got back from our day out the room had never been touched, the bed not made, the bins not emptied or the coffee replenished not even the cups washed, not good customer relations.
The hotel is covered in signs telling you what and what not to do, but they made us feel very intimadated. I think if you run a B&B you have to have trust in your guests, I have been to many places over the years, one even greated us with hello, there are the keys to your room we are away for the weekend "mary" will be in tomorrow to cook your breakfast etc, that is trust!
In my opinion this hotel should be rated as a basic B&B, priced a lot less than it is at present, maybe even a visit from the hotel inspector would be benificial to these people!!!!
I certainly would neither return to or recommend this hotel to anyone, it gives the impression of been a KGB offer in order to bring in the customers but word will get around how bad it is and it is not worth the money, it also gived the likes of KGB, GROUPN etc a bad name, I have had some super deals well worth the money and have recommended these to my friends and relatives who frequently have weekends away.
I have also learnt an important lesson, check out these hotels before buying the deal.
All rooms appear small and it seems to be pot luck which you are given.
