I booked my accommodation at Scottish Apartments/James Court apartments on 12 June 2006 through hotelclub for a 2 night stay on 14 and 15 June 2006. The booking confirmation I received advised me to check-in and collect my apartment keys at 493 Lawnmarket. When I arrived there, there was a tatty sign posted on the main door advising people that the office had moved to 6 Queen Street. A £6 cab journey later I arrived at 6 Queen Street where despite my complaint, neither an explanation nor an apology was forthcoming in relation to my wild goose chase. I was then given keys to an apartment in Grassmarket (though my confirmation letter said my accommodation was in Lawnmarket!). Again I needed a cab to get there - that cost an additional £6. When I opened the apartment door, my nostrils were assailed by the pervading aroma of damp and take-away food. The wood flooring throughout the apartment was in poor repair and in the hallway particularly, it posed a significant trip hazard. The apartment was nosiy, grubby and decorated "on the cheap". The standards of cleaning were questionnable and I found an old razor blade in the bath tub and a half-eaten packet of crisps under one of the beds.

The kitchen equipment was good. Microwave, big fridge freezer, cooker etc and the welcome pack of milk and cereals was most welcome. Location cannot be faulted as it is as central as you can get. Front bedrooms (with windows that refuse to close) are very noisy - late night revellers, traffic etc.

The smells from the take-away store below are nauseating and no matter where you position yourself in the apartment, you cannot get away from them.

I emailed Scottish Apartment with my complaint on 19 June together withn a request for a VAT receipt (which they were unable to provide when I checked-in). To date I have heard nothing back.

I will not be using this service again and cannot recommend.

Absolutley wonderful and so full of history! For those that love the community and not the stuffy snooty city type hotels, this is it!!! Top floor huge apt with windows open to the Royal Mile and to the Jolly Judge Pub below...just great! We can't wait to return and hope to get the same apt to re-live our wonderful memories!

My husband and I stayed at the James Court Apartments (aka Castle Apartments) for 3 nights and I have never been so impressed with a hotel. It was our honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The staff was very friendly and I was surprised to see that we really stayed in an apartment. There was a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. It felt like home instead of a hotel.

The building is so old that is has no elevators which we loved, but i would not reccomend this place for people who are afraid of stairs. It is located right on the Royal Mile in the heart of downtown Edinburgh which was perfect for us. We didn't want to miss any of the action. It was nice being able to hear the sounds of people down in the pub below us and hear the street performer playing his bagpipes in the late afternoon from our room. It just brought home the fact that we were in another country.

I was sad when we had to move on to our next location. I could have stayed a few more days and not yet had enough of Edinburgh. I will definitely stay there again.

Having arrived (tired) off a train from London at about 7pm, I walked to the James Court office at 493 Lawnmarket (per my booking confirmation) only to find a scruffy note on the door advising that the office had moved to 6 Queen Street. As I had luggage I made a £5 cab journey to the new address. The person manning the office, though perfectly polite, seemed more interested in getting payment off me than either apologising to me or explaining why I wasn't informed of the office move. Once I had paid I was informed that my apartment was actually not in Lawnmarket but in somewhere called Wardens Court. This was quite a distance from the office so I had little choice but to take another cab. At no point was there a suggestion that this might be paid for by James Court. I then requested a VAT receipt and received a blank stare - I think that they genuinely didn't know what this was!! Eventually and only after much protestation, I received a amateurish handwritten note in lieu of a receipt. I left the office at 8.15pm.

The cab driver had never heard of the Wardens Court address and it took an age to find it. £8 later, it was eventually located at around 8.45pm. I entered the apartment exhausted in the hope of relaxing. The whole place stank of something resembling old chip fat. The hallway reeked of damp and this was confirmed by the fact that the wood floor was falling apart and presented a dangerous trip hazard. With the exception of the kitchen, the apartment was grubby, poorly maintained and had a feel of having been" tarted-up on the cheap". The bathroom was dirty and had remnants of the previous occupant - a razor in the bathtub and hair in the sink. YUCK!!

I could go on and on and on but I shall stop here. I have no doubt that some of the apartments that this company offers are fine but if you book with them please avoid being shunted off to 2 Wardens Court. I can still smell the old chip fat in my nose.

Suit a stag night - not for any sort of home comforts or a bit of luxury. Plain and uninviting - shower was rubish - near got 3rd degree burns - no fire alarm / extinguisher or seperate fire escape! Website gives wrong impresion, this is not a step up from a hotel but more of a hostel. I stayed with a few mates but would have been devestated if I had booked in with my family.
