Stayed in the Budget Backpackers in Edinburgh for 4 nights. What an awesome experience. Staff there are awesome, and they do pub crawls everynight except for saturday and sunday @ 9pm. Some of the staff were Aussie which was cool too as we could relate to them like old mates from home. We met heaps of cool people there too. And if you want cheap good meals, The Castle Arms just up the road do great meals, and cheap if your at the Hostel.

We have just returned from 3 nights staying at Budget backpackers in Edinburgh which cost us each £10 a night and this is a quick review.

Just for a bit of background in the past I have stayed in a number of hostels some quite disgusting which I will never go near never mind stay in again and some which were quite nice however this is the best hostel i have honestly ever had the pleasure to stay in.

The hostel itself is in a great location on the junction separating Cowgate from Grassmarket in the old town of Edinburgh. This meant that there were plenty of bars, cafe's, restaurants, pubs and shops nearby to visit. Also it was only a five minute walk to the royal mile and you have a fantastic view of the castle from the reception and chill out rooms.

The accommodation was bright and spacious, smoke free and very homely. There was a games room with pool table and giant connect four and a chill out room with plenty of sofas and a big plasma tv where lots of long term backpackers seemed to chill out but all were very friendly. The reception also had three internet ready computers for £1 for 30mins. We stayed in a six bed dorm located on the first floor in the main building. We were given fresh cover, pillow and duvet sheets at the start of our stay and the room was very clean with free lockers inside the room to keep your belongings secure. Our room consisted of three bunk beds which were very comfy and each had a small shelf for belongings and a small light. We found it quite easy to get a good nights sleep as the majority of other ‘hostelites’ were quite respectful when walking through the halls. It has to be said was that there were lots and lots of showers, toilets and sinks throughout the hostel which were regularly cleaned. All the showers were in private cubicles with locks on and you could adjust the pressure from trickle to powershower (my option!). Being a very clean person I was very satisfied with the quality of the cleaning and toilet facilities.

Finally the staff were magnificent very vigilant with security but very friendly and always asking how our stay was going and giving us helpful tips where to get cheap discounted grub and the best bars around the area. I heartily recommend this hostel to anybody taking a quick weekend break, far better value than a travel lodge or somebody wishing to stay longer term.

In short its dirt cheap, the accomodation, location and facilities are excellent and the staff are wonderful, what more could you want.

  • Liked — Cheap Price but the good quality of the accomodation
  • Disliked — There is nothing I can honestly think of, it was all good.
  • Tips/Secrets: — Go to the castle arms pub, great food low prices.

I just got back from a few nights here. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location is great too. I would highly recommend this hostel. They give free city tours and organize pub crawls most evenings.

This hostel was GREAT, if you don't mind the bright colour scheme! We had a double room (sadly no double bed), which was very clean and in a quiet part of the hostel. The toilets and showers were always clean, and the breakfast was cheap and adequate (although be warned, they really pack up quick at the end). Give the muffins / pastries a miss though - they're dried out and not too tasty. We were there during the Edinburgh Festival, so the whole place was buzzing and yet we could still get a great night's sleep. Everything was within easy walking distance, and the friendly staff were great for directions when needed. Would definitely stay there again - if we can every afford to get over to Scotland again!!

We (4 girls mid 20yrs-early 30yrs) stayed 1 night on a Saturday
We choose it due to previous reviews, location. We were not backpacking, just wanted somewhere reasonably priced, central and clean for 1 night... here we got all 3.
We booked a 4 bedded girls dorm (in main building) and had comfy beds. Suprised by how clean room were and plenty of bathrooms (some unisex) were excellent. I would assume it is used mainly by travellers but I would definitely recommend to those wanting cheap getaway or stag/hen do. Can be a bit noisy but everyone including us were out for a good time.
