We booked this hostel as our destination for the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations! There was 6 of us travelling together so thankfully we had a whole 6 room dorm to ourselves.

Having stayed at the Budget before I knew what to expect, and they have not cut corners on quality or service at all in the 3 years since my last visit.

Staff: The staff are what makes this place great, due to the nature of the amount of people travelling we had lots of questions and issues and at all times the staff were curteous and prompt in replying to emails. Travelling at Hogmanay time meant we had to pay beforehand in full, which was no worry and we were able to phone and pay with Credit Card.

My highest regards go to the staff here, on a busy time like Hogmanay they always tryed to make you feel welcome.

Very good security policy, every guest is given a pass which you must show to gain access to the hostel. This was especially important on New Years Eve when every one is a little under the weather!

Room: Fairly stock standard dorm room, very large room with high ceilings, means your not feeling cramped or like you are living on top of each other. Rooms felt a little damp but with the window and door open this helped flush the smell away. Beds were good enough - your staying at a hostel so you cant expect much, but the pillows were comfortable enough for me.

Facilities: Plenty of showers spread all over the place, you might have a little walk to get there but you can usually find plenty of spares. There are a couple of common rooms and kitchens, the common room on the top floor has a good view up to Edinburgh Castle - and a nice plasma TV.

Location: You honestly can't complain about the location, just down the hill from the Royal Mile and close to quite a few bars. Only downside is that if you catch the bus from the Airport it drops you on the city side of the Royal Mile and this hostel is on the old town side of the Mile. So you have to walk up the hill, and then back down. But not too bad.

If your planning on going on a Haggis Tour, its a pretty easy walk from the Hostel to the departure point for the tour.

If your coming to Edinburgh and don't want to spend a fortune then this is the place for you. Much better quality than some of the Backpackers up on the Royal Mile, with staff that are willing to help you out.

My four friends and I stayed at the hostel from 19th-22nd sept....my friends were a little dubious that it was a hostel and not a 5 star hotel but they all LOVED it!! Steffan is a sweetheart (he had to put up with lots of alcohol induced conversations from us at night)...

the beds were comfy (although seemed a tiny bit damp when you jump in first)....no noise (surprisingly) so was really easy to sleep...bedrooms and bathrooms were absolutely spotless...(just remember your in unisex land when your emerging from the shower ladies)...and there was a lovely friendly easy-going vibe to the place...

it is so close to everywhere you want to go...pubs, niteclubs, the castle, royal mile, princes st.... we all want to go back and stay there next time we're in edinburgh and we all enjoyed the craic of the place. definetely the best hostel any of us have ever stayed in.

Very good place to stay! Clean, located in the very centre of the Old Town (so near, pubs, clubs, the castle, and some other tourist hot spots), nice staff, proper rooms (with good mattresses, which is remarkable for a hostel...but definitely a big plus!), nice, clean bathrooms (and important: no icy shower!!), decent security policy, free pub crawls, "guided" tours etc. etc., newly furnished kitchens, great common room, chill out room so all in all definitely a great deal!! Any downsides? Not really. Unfortunately there was no chair in your room to sit on, using the internet was a bit expensive (1 pound for 30 minutes), but all of minor importance! This place is worth the recommandation!

  • Liked — cleanliness, no icy shower, comfy beds, chill out room, location
  • Disliked — expensive to use internet

Location was great but had small problems finding the area initially. Dont walk too far. Its not really far from the Royal Mile.
Its a very colourful place, clean, and extremely friendly. Those at the reception are always available to give suggestions and show you good places to eat, drink.
Very near to a great club just down the road(come out and do a u-turn) where there is no cover charge and there are 4 floors of different music.

Yes try out the free walking tours. They are a fun bunch of canadians(been there only 3 months but well they know a helluva lot!) which is free but please do be generous. The castle was great although entrance was bit a steep but it was history. Didnt get to do the whisky tour :(

Had a great time in edinburgh!

Since the reception the staff is really and helpful, they speak many languages at the front desk (English, Spanish, French). The Hostel has a great relaxed design plus they organize walk tours around the city.

Being a Hostal you'll share your room with other really interesting people.

Great hotel for Young travelers in downtown Edinburgh. Everything is at walk distance.
