We booked this hostel as our destination for the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations! There was 6 of us travelling together so thankfully we had a whole 6 room dorm to ourselves.
Having stayed at the Budget before I knew what to expect, and they have not cut corners on quality or service at all in the 3 years since my last visit.
Staff: The staff are what makes this place great, due to the nature of the amount of people travelling we had lots of questions and issues and at all times the staff were curteous and prompt in replying to emails. Travelling at Hogmanay time meant we had to pay beforehand in full, which was no worry and we were able to phone and pay with Credit Card.
My highest regards go to the staff here, on a busy time like Hogmanay they always tryed to make you feel welcome.
Very good security policy, every guest is given a pass which you must show to gain access to the hostel. This was especially important on New Years Eve when every one is a little under the weather!
Room: Fairly stock standard dorm room, very large room with high ceilings, means your not feeling cramped or like you are living on top of each other. Rooms felt a little damp but with the window and door open this helped flush the smell away. Beds were good enough - your staying at a hostel so you cant expect much, but the pillows were comfortable enough for me.
Facilities: Plenty of showers spread all over the place, you might have a little walk to get there but you can usually find plenty of spares. There are a couple of common rooms and kitchens, the common room on the top floor has a good view up to Edinburgh Castle - and a nice plasma TV.
Location: You honestly can't complain about the location, just down the hill from the Royal Mile and close to quite a few bars. Only downside is that if you catch the bus from the Airport it drops you on the city side of the Royal Mile and this hostel is on the old town side of the Mile. So you have to walk up the hill, and then back down. But not too bad.
If your planning on going on a Haggis Tour, its a pretty easy walk from the Hostel to the departure point for the tour.
If your coming to Edinburgh and don't want to spend a fortune then this is the place for you. Much better quality than some of the Backpackers up on the Royal Mile, with staff that are willing to help you out.
