My boyfriend took me to this hotel for my birthday last year and it was really very impressive.
We flew to Edinburgh from London and had a fantastic weekend. The hotel room was really huge - it was one of the penthouse corner rooms - and perfectly cleaned every day and well furnished. And a great location.
It was a great surprise to find the swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna downstairs as it was very nice.

We had a lovely dinner one of the nights in the restaurant which was nice and posh, andthe live pianist made it excellent.

Edinburgh was very romantic, I really enjoyed wandering through the hills and cliffs, eating cream scones in cafes' picturesque gardens and touring the history of the area - not to mention shopping.

I think this hotel is more like a 5* instead of a 4*, and I was really really impressed.

  • Liked — It was lovely clean and spacious with polite and helpful staff in a good location
  • Disliked — nothing

Hi, we stayed in the carlton for one night, the rooms were lovely and found the hotel to be very clean and staff to be very courteous, if you have booked don't worry about the other bad reviews, we found it to be very nice!

  • Liked — location, staff and value
  • Disliked — it was rather noisy but it is a central hotel.

Disappointing Experience

I dined in a small party at the hotel restaurant recently and left with mixed and overall, rather disappointing experiences of the competence, courtesy and efficiency of the staff and the management.

While the meal itself was faultless in quality and presentation, the lack of thorough cleaning (dust on wood surrounds) and the over-eagerness of staff (interrupting conversations being a persistent feature) detracted from our evening. The efficiency of service in the lounge bar was erratic and uncertain. The bins for paper towels in both the ladies and the gents toilets were over-flowing and despite this being drawn to the attention of staff the problem remained unattended. Staff seemed to lack the flexibility or inclination to attend to any matter not perceived as being their responsibility.

We had a brief discussion with the duty manager who noted our concerns and expressed gratitude for these being drawn to his attention though there was no evidence of any immediate action. The evening ended on a sour note when, on leaving, one of the bar staff pursued us claiming that our bar bill was unpaid. After some unpleasant exchanges, an error in recording the payment was acknowledged and we left after receiving a rather grudging apology.

We are happy to pay several hundred pounds on a good quality meal in pleasant surroundings. Unfortunately we felt that our experience on this occasion did not reflect the standards of a premium establishment.

We booked an upgraded King room (a significantly increased rate) but firstly allocated a twin bedded room on changing room we thought we had been changed to a double bed. We later found out the bed was not in fact a double but 2 single beds pushed together, the beds can be zipped together but sadly the zip was broken and so was the bed base. The next day our room was serviced to a degree but the tea/coffee, biscuits not replenished as was the toilet roll ( must be economising) the bed was unmade under the top cover and to add insult to injury is took 30 minutes to get served at the bar. Not a great advert for Edinburgh and I fear this hotel will disappoint a lot of tourists.

We got a fantastic deal on this hotle and me and my boyfriend decided to go away for the weekend over Easter. This hotel was fantastic, the pool left little to be desired but the jacuzzie, steam room and sauna was great. We never used the gym as it was a relaxing break rather than our usual routine. It is located just of priness bridge and within easy walking distance from Edinbrough castle. You have to walk through the princess street gardens it was a really lovely day when we were there and it was quit a romantic setting. This hotel was excellently placed the only downfall it has, is that they do not have parking facilities and you have to use the Renissance car park across the street, wich of course costs more as you do not get a discounted rate. So that is something to bear in mind when booking,it may be cheaper to stay somewhere else with the same kinds of facilities.

Room service was fantastic and we dinned in our room one evening, to food was fine just what you would expect really.
