Stayed for two nights on business at the Carlton and had fairly mixed views on the experience. On the up side, the hotel is central, the public areas are pleasant and the food is, on the whole, good. The concierge is very helpful and great fun.
Now to the down side. My room, while very large, seemed to be in the middle of a refurb. The curtains, bedding and bathroom looked new ( but the shower rail had come away from its ceiling support and there was a 4 inch gap at the bottom of the bath panel that was full of dust and a couple of hair bands).
The double bed was two singles shoved together- fine except one was higher than the other, leaving a two inch ridge running down the centre of the bed. One of the pillowcases was too small for the pillow- revealing a torn and stained pillow, complete with a couple of hairs.
The furniture in the room was fine- apart from one metal legged chair and stained phone table-come seat which both looked as if they had been lifted straight from the seventies. The carpet was at odds with the rest of the room and looked as if no-one had hoovered the three inches next to the walls for a considerable time. Overall, the room looked like it could do with a thorough clean. I checked the rooms of a few colleagues who were also staying and they were pretty much in the same state.
My biggest concern however and one which I feel there is no excuse for, comes down to safety. I make a habit of checking the fire escape diagram that is required to be in every hotel bedroom, to check my nearest point of escape, should the worst happen. The diagram in my room at the Carlton, was totally innacurate. The room highlighted as being mine was in the wrong place and on the wrong side of the corridor - this would have meant had I followed it's guidance in an emergency, I would have gone totally the wrong way. The diagrams in my colleagues rooms were similarly inaccurate.
BEWARE- should you stay at this hotel, don't rely on these diagrams to lead you to safety in a fire. I highlighted this problem to the hotel in the customer feedback form, so hopefully this situation will change.
