We stayed in the Carlton for 3 nights Fri-Mon. On checking in at 2pm, we asked for a 'quiet room', it wasn't ready so we were asked to leave our luggage and come back in 1/2 hour, so I presume that quiet rooms are not considered standard and that they had to get one ready? After lunch around the corner we retrieved our luggage effortlessly from the concierge and found our room.
The room was quite small but had two armchairs and what appeared to be free internet access point for a laptop. The mini bar wasn't completely stocked and wasn't re-stocked during our stay (we never really use them but like to think we would have all the choice available if we did). I also had to ring housekeeping for two large towels that seem to have been forgotten. The TV had all five terrestrial channels, ITV2 and some radio channels. Teletext was accessed via BBC1 on a different channel to the other BBC1 channel number, so presuambly they have digital feed for most and then analogue to provide the teletext on channel 14 (an odd set-up?).
This quiet room was to the rear of the building on the second floor, so the view was minimal, but this wasn't a problem for us as we didn't expect one. What we did find is that seeing as we were only the second floor of 5-6 floors in total, we were quite close to air conditioning ducting outside of our window on an external flat roof. Seeing as our first day was quite tiring we tried to sleep early for a good start the next day. The external air conditioning was quite loud and didn't stop until 10.30pm. We didn't make any complaint at the time as I was giving it a chance to turn off at some point, and being a Friday night in Edinburgh the chances of them having another free room were slim. We didn't notice the noise on the subsequent 2 nights, although we were back to the room much later in the evening than our first night. The tempertaure control was good in the room. The air conditioning had a sign stating 'changes may take 15 mins to be acted upon' but I found the room chilly at night time and no there was no evidence that the air conditioning was heating the room at any time.
Breakfast was a buffet style with hot and cold and was spot on. Tea /coffee and toast were freshly ordered. Staff were friendly and helpful (they would talk and ask you questions about your stay in the lift , along the corridor etc.)
All in all, a perfectly comfortable stay in a Hotel that I would say is better than budget, functional if not quite as 'luxury' as it could be given more attention to detail.
