“Very average hotel redeemed by a fantastic restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

Room was just about OK although nothing fancy - bathroom sparse. Clean and functional but nothing special. Wireless internet wouldn't work - although they apologised for this and offered me a free drink at the bar to say sorry.
Pool area - OK - was nice as was only person in it, but it's not a spa - it's a small hotel pool with a sauna.
Restaurant on top floor is amazing - the service is phenomenal, the food exquisite and the views are incredible. Well worth a visit even if you are not staying in the hotel.
It has the potential to be a really good hotel with just a few more touches in the rooms, a reliable wireless network and a bit of TLC in the pool area.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It has a great location because it is near Princes Street and of course the castle views are picturesque. Grassmarket is a lovely little area to explore and it's also convenient as you can walk everywhere easily.

The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful and the room sizes are spacious for a city. The only thing that we didn't like was that you had to pay to park in the hotel car park. Overall, we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the opposite side of the hotel will be quieter but no view of the castle.

My and my boyfriend stayed in the above hotel to celebrate my 30th birthday. We had booked a superior room. We arrived at the hotel at 12.15, check in was really quick and as I was celebrating my birthday they upgraded us to a deluxe room, which had a balcony. Check in was at 2.30, however, the room was ready around 13.00.

The room was nice and clean and the bed really comfortable. Previous reviews have mentioned it being noisy, however, the only time I needed my ear plugs was for my boyfriends snoring!

We had paid for breakfast and there was a great selection to choose from and you had stunning views of the castle while eating breakfast.

Location is very central, only a 10 min walk from princes st.

Would recommend this hotel for anyone. They even have a lounge area where kids can play the wii and there is a swimming pool..

We did this hotel on a weekend break, 1st nov to 3rd nov. 2 adults I teenage girl.
Hotel room was clean, but very cold, the windows needed replacing you could hear everything for the outside. Tea & coffee, with biscuits each day in your room. Rooms cleaned daily.
This was room only bored, but some fabulous cafés on the square outside, cheaper then the hotel.
My main negative remark would be, the corridors where very dark and poorly lit, which spooked me a little in the event of a fire..exits didn't seem to be well sign posted....they need the 'big light' on to see any signs...other than that, you get what you pay for, clean, comfortable, fantastically placed for Edinburgh...the castle is a 10 min walk if that
Ladies no high heels please, there are lots of cobbled streets here

I have stayed in the Apex a number of times over the years. I love the location of the hotel right in the heart of the Grassmarket and the views of the castle are stunning! Our room was a great size and had a really comfy bed and pillows. The bathroom was also a good size and had a separate shower and bath. I think the room was really good value for money. We also got to use the pool and sauna which are great for chilling out during your stay. The staff in reception are always friendly and welcoming and really helpful. I will be back again next time I visit Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view of the castle.

Stayed here with a group of friends. Room was not ready to check in but we had complementary drinks in the bar and when read your cases were moved to the room.
The room was great - large, airy, modern, clean with a spectacular view of the castle. There was 2 double beds, fridge, opening windows, tea and coffee making, lots of fluffy towels.
The best thing about the hotel was the location- right on the grass market , close to restaurants , bars, shops, sights. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the castle.

We booked this hotel to give our teenage boys a taste of luxury. The hotel's location is superb, right in the heart of the old town so everything was within walking distance and the fantastic view of the castle, especially from the 5th floor restaurant. The staff couldn't do enough to help and we couldn't fault them. The main thing that let the hotel down was the unwelcoming feel of the entrance and reception areas. There didn't seem to be a lounge area as such and the lifts were a bit battered and unfinished. They could have passed as goods lifts. We used the stairs many times and felt they weren't meant to be used as they had not been finished to a guest standard. Other than these cosmetic criticisms, the hotel was a great place to stay, especially with access to the pool and gym (the latter didn't seem to be well publicised). A pleasant surprise, for me especially.

Beware when booking a castle view room that there is a loose manhole cover in the road below which clatters every time a car goes by. A few times is bearable but all day and all night gets a bit wearing. You would need to keep your window closed to get some sleep.
