“Nice Hotel, let down by the staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

We stayed here for a friends stag doo, the room was really nice and the hotel is in a good location. However they checked us in two and a half hours late without any kind of explanation and were generally very dismissive of this fact.
Would not stay here again.

We decided to book the Apex over many other hotels mainly because of the onsite parking facilities.
The hotel is in a great location and the views from the restaurant are spectacular – unfortunately we stayed on a Monday evening and the restaurant was closed but breakfast was AMAZING a proper Scottish breakfast!
Our room was really comfortable modern and a good standard the shower was brilliant really powerfull – the only downside to the room was our view looked over the car park but we booked last minute and got a good deal so was still well worth the price.
I would definitely stay here again and have already recommended this hotel to friends and family who also were impressed. I would definitely pay the extra for the views of the castle though.

Room Tip: Book a room with Views over the Castle

We stayed here because we wanted to come to Edinburgh by train and be able to explore the city without the car. I'd stayed here a long time ago on business and remembered the great location right by the Castle. It was as good as I remembered and we really enjoyed easy walks to the galleries, shops and restaurants nearby- maps are available at reception and the staff are very happy to direct or advise you. We paid a slightly higher rate for a larger room with a view of the Castle and it was great- it meant we faced onto the main road with the traffic/people noise you'd expect but for me that's all part of the excitement of staying in a city and didn't affect how well I slept. Breakfast was fantastic- we were set up for the day after we'd eaten it and enjoyed more great views from the restaurant. They even laid on a picturesque snow shower on our last day! The only thing that would stop me giving a top rating was that the fixtures were a little bit scuffed and worn in places, which took the edge off that luxury feeling. Overall, though, we really enjoyed the stay and are likely to be back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a castle view if you don't mind a little street noise. Rooms at the back of the hotel ar...

Extremely friendly staff, very good location and a great hotel! A very nice bar. The location is in a street of history. Close to the airport bus, just A ten minute walk. You can walk around in Edinburgh and still be close to reis hotel.

Our group stayed at this property. Centrally located. The castle can be seen from the rooms facing the front. Lots of pubs in front of the hotel on Grassmarket street. Shopping around the corner. Short walk to The Royal Mile.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street have a good view but can be noisy if the windows are left opened.

The price reflects the largest rooms and extra comfort. Bathroom is huge as is the walk in shower room. Very nice if you can afford it. My only gripe is that breakfast is an extra £13 when there are pubs 2 minutes away with breakfasts for £6

We went here as a bit of a treat but also because my husband used to work in this building in 1991 when it was still part of Heriot Watt University! It was interesting to see how they've changed the layout of the building - tho still the same lifts! We decided to go for a 'superior' room with a view of the castle - definitely worth it. It was on the 5th floor - just along from the dining-room, another great view while having breakfast each day! I liked the fact that there was no hot buffet for breakfast but the cooked food was brought fresh to order - I hate the way food dries out under hot lights. The pool is small but our daughter enjoyed it and the sauna (free towels and pleasant changing room with locker). Parking was £12 each day - under the hotel - not bad for Edinburgh prices. The Grassmarket area is noisy til quite late (we weren't offered any ear-plugs!) but as we're not early bedders ourselves it was ok. Great spot for getting about Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Go for 5th floor for views. Plus handy for breakfast in morning!
