“Some improvements needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

I stayed here for a family reunion for 4 nights. The rooms were very clean and were of excellent quality. We ate at the hotel bar two nights and were disappointed with the speed of service. It took over two hours for just two courses. We also ate in the Heights restaurant which was similarly slow taking 3 hours for 3 courses. The food was delicious but the whole process was too drawnout. Buffet breakfast was excellent. Staff were exceptional throughout the stay.

The rooms were very warm during the night but you cannot open the windows as Grassmarket is very noisy - unbelievably so at weekends. There is a fan but air conditioning should be installed to allow a comfortable sleep. Also no buggy/wheelchair access to the bar or reception. There is wheelchair access to the rooms.

First visit to this hotel, and the Grassmarket area, very good location, luvly room facing rear of castle, had a family room (2 persons sharing) two double beds, plenty of room, with ample wardrobe and shelf space, large t v. tea /coffee facilities & a safe. Housekeeping to a high standard, very nice comfy bed, very good pillows, fluffy towels, yes at the front there is noise but once the window is shut no noise! Only one thing to have a slight mump about, only one shampoo and one conditioner available in the bathroom, usually a shower lotion/ body cream, shower cap etc is offered, always a little treat for the ladies with nice brand toiletries to use, also in our case two ladies sharing only one of each not ideal. The restaurant for breakfast with a wonderfuel view of the castle, was very good, good variety of juices, cereals, rolls, cheese, yogurts etc, also a cooked "Scottish" breakfast, or omelette, poached egg etc on offer, something for everyone, the porridge with cream and honey was soo delicious my mother in law had it on two occasions, all served by our luvly server Lola, who greeted us with a smile every morning, as were the other staff who all seemed happy at their work. Reception staff friendly and welcoming on our arrival / departure, also very helpful at ordering taxis etc, The voucher we received from the hotel ( £10 if you book direct with the hotel, they will match any price offered from other sites) we spent in the bar on cocktails, Norbert the barman can make a very very good Mojito, well done, you are up there with the best of them, really enjoyed it. Will stay here again, thank you all :)

If you're willing to spend the extra few quid for this Grassmarket location, you won't be disappointed. You're right in the heart of Edinburgh, with - if you're lucky - a castle view. Rooms are reasonably sized, the staff are friendly, there's an indoor pool. Cons would be: The place feels a little bit in need of refreshment - gaffer tape on the floor lamps in the bar for example. I'm not sure I needed a rubber duck in my shower, either. But you're not paying for primped luxury, you're paying for being in the heart of one of Europe's truly great cities.

Room Tip: Ask for a castle view if you're a heavy sleeper - these rooms overlook Grassmarket itself - a bu...

We stayed here overnight for a girls night out. Fantastic location with views off the castle no need for taxis as all pubs and restaurants are near by. Beds where comfy and free wifi came in handy.
Will use this hotel again

All fantastic. Very clean. Extremely conscientious reception staff. Good parking. Only complaint is the really tacky and un-classy pop music played at breakfast. Not what to expect from a £100+ a night hotel!

Nice modern hotel - key pluses are the view of the castle from the rooms on the higher floors is breathtaking and the cooked breakfast is outstanding. On the downside, no air conditioning, and can be stuffy during summer. You can open the door to the balcony or window but pubs can be a little noisy on a weekend summer evening.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor facing the castle. Worth the extra.

I love this hotel!!! The location is supurb for exploring almost everything in Edinburgh. It is convenient to Prince's Street, the buses, Waverley Station for trains and just a short walk to many pubs and restaurants. It is just a short hike up to the Royal Mile with the Castle and Holyrood Palace. The food was excelent. They have a varied and interesting assortment of menu items. Everything I tried I would definitely order again. The breakfast up at the Heights Restaurant on the 5th floor was great. A view of the Castle while having a danish and coffee made it even better. I can't say enough good stuff about the reception desk. They were extremely helpful with directions, dining suggestions and getting transportation. I give the Apex an A+.
