We stayed at the Apex International Edinburgh for two nights in March.
The Apex International is a modern hotel in Grassmarket which is usually a picturesque area, however, the surrounding area did resemble a building site due to building work, but once it is complete, the area will be lovely especially in the summer and at Christmas. There are plenty of little shops, restaurants and bars near to the hotel there is even a "late shop" and a fish and chip shop!
The hotel is a modern hotel which fantastic views of Edinburgh Castle. Our room was located on the 2nd floor and had great views of the Castle and Grassmarket. The room was comfortable, warm and well equipped (jelly beans and pringles included!). There was a safe, fridge, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. The bathroom was modern, clean and the only downside was that there didn't appear to be any heating in the bathroom which made it cold when you came out of the shower. Also, there was no bath, just a shower which did leak quite a lot. There was a lack of hanging facilities in the bathroom. We ate out the first night and on the second night we tried to book a meal in the "Heights Restaurant" which overlooks the Castle. Unfortunately, Heights Restaurant was fully booked, so if you do decide to stay here, make sure you book the restaurant in advance. There is another restaurant called the "Metro Restaurant", but this appeared somewhat dull and the menu did nothing for us. There are lots of eating places within very easy walking distance and we did manage to book a table at an american pizza restaurant just across from the hotel.
Breakfast in the morning was in th Heights Restaurant and was fanastic. There was a help yourself continental style buffet and orders were taken for Scottish Breakfast. There was plenty of choice and breakfast could not be faulted. The breakfast staff were very professional and attentive.
The pool was an added extra, but was quite small. The changing rooms were rather cramped and the lockers were limited. We ended up taking our clothes to the pool area due to the lack of lockers.
All in all though, an excellent hotel which I would recommend. As mentioned before, once the building work has finished in Grassmarket it will only improve the hotel.
If staying in Edinburgh again, we would definately try to book this hotel again.
