My friend and I stayed with Gerald for 3 nights towards the end of July. His hospitality and the comfort of his bed and breakfast made my stay in Edinburgh very memorable. We had a twin room (2 beds) with tempurpedic pillows, awesome mattresses, warm down blankets, tea service, TV, hair-dryer (so I didn't need my own converter) and best of all, Gerald. This is his home. A beautiful basement apartment in a regal Georgian style building. It is 3 hilly blocks away from Waverly Station, but still only about 5 minutes away. Waverly Station is where you would take all the city-sightseeing buses so it is very convenient. The home itself has a lot of stairs, so it might not be good for those unable to ambulate well. His hot and sumptuous breakfast is catered according to your wishes and substantial enough that only a light snack is needed during your daytime touring. Take every single advice this man offers you! Dinner recommendations were fabulous. My best meal during my 9-night trip to the UK was at a restaurant he recommended--Fisher's on Thistle Street. Got to have the fish soup and seafood salad. Here's a picture of Gerald ironing your sheets.

  • Liked — Gerald's wealth of information and abundant hospitality.
  • Disliked — Not a problem for me, but the stairs might be difficult for those who can't walk well.

We stayed here for three nights in July 2007. Great location - was able to walk to everything we wanted to do. Lots of nice extras including a bottle of wine, free use of laptop (and internet), videos and DVD's. Breakfasts of your choice of Scottish favorites and lots of good attraction information. Very comfortable and clean. With only two rooms - it is like eating in your own kitchen in the morning. Considering the cost of other, less attractive, alternatives - this was a good value for the money. Gerald was very responsive to e-mails prior to our visit, which helped us make our plans for our time in Edinburgh. We were also fortunate enough to meet his lovely sister - Gloria.

We Stayed at Gerald's Place in July 2007 for 3 nights. We had a lovely stay and received a very warm welcome. The room was comfortable, clean and spacious. Gerald made us feel very welcome and was an excellent host. The location was fantastic for the city centre.

We always like to stay in small B&B's because of the kind and personal treatment you receive, the homely decoration and the cleanness. Gerald's place was absolutely up to our high demandings! The house is very nice with a lot of pictures on the wall, Gerald and his sister (who looked after us two days) are very kind, like to give advice and to help you when needed. The breakfast is very good and the food is bought and cooked for you with a lot of attention! You musn't mind sitting at the same breafast table as the other guests...but we enjoyed talking to our fellow breakfast guests :-) One other very positive thing and very modern! is the laptop that is especially for the use of the guests.
We certainly would recommend this B&B to our family and friends.

Gerald's Place is without a doubt the most comfortable B&B I have ever stayed in. The rooms are clean and the beds are superb. Gerald, the host, gives you everything you could possibly wish to know about what to do in Edinburgh, and is extremely gracious and charming. The breakfast are entirely organic, and he has travelled all over the city to find the best products, which shows in the delicious spread that is offered every morning. Free internet access from the rooms, a digi box, and a digital radio, along with all the types of coffee and tea you could possibly hope for mean you don't really want to leave your room!
If you are going to Edinburgh, there is no other place to go!
