Have just returned from spending a long weekend at Gerald's Place in Edinburgh and had a fantastic time.
Gerald is a true gentleman and made us feel extremely welcome from the moment we stepped through the door. For those people who like a B&B to be a home from home you could wish for nothing more. Gerald includes many thoughtful touches in the bedroom/bathroom - particularly found it use to have such a range of toiletries, especially the hairspray, as I'd left mine at home! Bed is extremely comfortable - definately the most comfortable I've slept in and is was nice to have a radio in the room and use of video player and DVD player (although we didn't use the latter 2 as there was so much to do in Edinburgh). Breakfast is taken in the kitchen with Gerald's delicious cooked breakfast (no oil used/healthily cooked) and the option of oats, museli, yoghurts, fruit etc. as a healthy alternative. We liked the fact Gerald joined us at the table a couple of mornings for a chat - he's a very interesting guy!!
From the B&B you are a 5 minute up-hill walk back to Georges Street which has some lovely bars/restaurants (Browns was particularly nice at the far end) and some of the up market high street stores - Coast, Karen Millen, Moss Bros etc. If you turn to the left when you get to George St and walk to the end (past Hard Rock Cafe) and round the park area you reach Harvey Nics and some of the nice designer jobs and these in turn lead on to a shopping centre. Princes Street speaks for itself - shop after lovely shop. This sounds like we did nothing but shop but we also did many of the sights. The first day there we went on an open top bus ride to get our bearings - brilliant value for money and you can hop off and on at your leisure - would recommend you stay on the whole route to start off with though just so you can get an idea of where everything is. Edinburgh Castle is a must and we also did one of the tours under the city which was really interesting. The Dungeons we didn't think were very good - but that's just our personal opinion. Would have been very disappointed if we'd made the full price of £25 for 2 adults but we managed to get hold of a admit 1 adult free leaflet so it was ok. The architecture in Edinburgh is almost 2nd to none and on the last day we did wander from the new town to the old town round in a loop - although boy did my legs know about it at the end!! All in all would definately recommend Geralds Place and Edinburgh to anyone and everyone and we can't wait to visit again later in the year. I should also mention Gerald will provide you with loads of info on places to visit and is kind enough to offer to book restaurants etc if you wish.
