My wife and I stayed at Gerald's Place for 6 nights in April 2007. In planning our trip, I had contacted several different proprietors of a bed and breakfast in Edinburgh, but Gerald was the only owner to respond in depth and with keen detail on both what his bed and breakfast had to offer and what we, as first time visitors to Edinburgh, should expect as tourists in the city.

His attention to detail before we arrived carried over into our stay at Gerald's Place - he stocked the fridge with fresh milk every day, had tea and shortbread put in the room every afternoon, and cooked a full, delicious breakfast every morning. Gerald also provided us with access to a laptop every evening with wifi capability, so we were able to check in with both work and home while we were away.

We loved the location of the B&B, too. It was only a short walk to Prince's Street, the bus station, and the Castle, but far enough away to offer peace and quiet and a great view of the Queen Street Gardens.

Both the room and bathroom were clean, and well stocked with amenities like shampoo, conditioner, lotions and even contact lens solution (which proved to helpful, since our own personal supply of solution was confiscated by customs upon entry to the UK).

For anyone looking for a welcome place to stay in Edinburgh, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more suitable stay than at Gerald's Place.

Stayed at Gerald's Place for 4 nights. Host was very helpful with local bookings and current events. He called us in the USA to confirm the type of room we requested. He had many suggestions on how to see the local sights and highlighted his favorites. Also made reservations for evening meals at nearby dining places. These meals were excellent and reasonably priced. Gerald's Place is located near downtown Edinburgh and is within easy walking distance to Princes Street.
Accommodations were large and well kept. The beds were comfortable and the room was decorated nicely. Material was provided to illustrate some of the interesting things to do in the Edinburgh area. Breakfast was exceptional, one of the best we have experienced in our travels. Fresh local products are featured and speciality items are readily available. Host offered to obtain kippers and smoked salmon so we could experience a true Scottish breakfast.
Host made travel arrangements to the airport.
We highly recommend Gerald's Place and we plan to stay there on our next trip to Edinburgh.

We stayed at Gerald's place for only two nights as he was booked up.

But we were very happy with the arrangements. He answered my email and did the booking very fast. In addition he sent me details about our stay including train schedules, directions, all kiinds of helpful information.

When we got there, he was waiting with an offer of tea or wine. Gave us tourist brochures, was available to talk about them, made recommendations for getting around and such, offered to book tours, dinner, whatever for us.

The house was delightful, warm, comfortable, very Scottish, decorated with lovely art. We had breakfast, which he cooked, every morning and to order. He is a fine cook and accommodating as to time, menu. Two other people were there and we enjoyed them.

There are two rooms. We stayed in the one with the big bed and bath en suite. It was clean, comfortable, private, pleasant. We could not have asked for more.

We both loved this place, it was exceptional. Close to everything, we walked everywhere. Restaurants all around in a block or two. We would recommend it without reservation,,it is a lovely place to stay in a quiet neighborhood, safe, beautiful and homey!

  • Liked — Comfort, closeness to sights to visit, safe neighborhood

My partner and I have just spent 3 wonderful nights at geralds place.
From the moment we stepped through the front door It felt like home. Gerald was there to greet us and help with our luggage.
We were shown around geralds beautiful cozy home, and shown maps and guides on places of Interest. Everything was so well thought out.
Our room had everything you could need, a mini-fridge( with filtered water, a nice touch ) Coffee, a selection of teas and shortbread biscuits, and lots of little extras too. Gerald even gave us a complimentary bottle of wine, which I thought was really nice.
The King sized bed was out of this world....soooo comfortable that I almost overslept the morning we were leaving.
I especially liked the way Gerald let us choose our own time for breakfast, everything was so relaxed.
The food was cooked in front of us in a warm cozy kitchen. We had the cooked breakfast and it was wonderful.
Grealds place is in a great location just 2 blocks from Princes Street and In walking distance to all of the places of Interest.
We love visiting Edinburgh and now we love it even more knowing we have such a warm Inviting place to stay.
We are going back In November for the Christmas Market and guess where we will be staying.
Looking forward to seeing gerald again.

After doing research on Tripadvisor I decided to book my stay in Edinburgh at Gerald's Place. This is the best decision we made. We arrived in Edinburgh late in the morning, after a long overnight flight, we were greeted by a very cheerful Gerald. Gerald immediately took us under his wing. We were showed to our room, which had all of the amenities that a hotel would have (i.e. T.V., coffee maker, and shower gel, shampoo etc). Gerald did a short introduction, handed us a very easy to read city map, and had laid out many helpful booklets, and guides about Edinburgh. This was very handy. Gerald also, gave us ours keys immediately so we could come and go as we please during our stay. After the brief introduction we napped for two hours and then awoke to explore the city. It was a pleasant surprise that Gerald's Place is actually in the middle of EVERYTHING! The B&B is only two blocks from Princess Street, where all your shopping can be done. Over the bridge from Princess St is the Royal Mile where you'd find Edinburgh Castle and Hollyrood Palace. We did not have to worry about spending extra money on cabs. Gerald's Place is in a top location, you can walk everywhere. Also, please do try to get to Bertlini's restaurant. The restaurant is at the end of the street from the B&B. It is an upscale Italian restaurant with homemade meals. The food is impeccable, and at the end of your meal the chef will come around to your table to insure the food was made to your likening. Now, one thing to note that in Edinburgh you need to make your reservations before you go out to dinner. If you mention this to Gerald in the morning he will be more then happy to book your table for you.
After the long days we spent touring the city, it was nice to come back to Gerald's Place. This was the first time that we booked at a B&B we usually stay at upscale hotels. I did not expect to sleep in a bed that was soooo comfortable. I swear I slept like a baby each night. The bed was very comfortable, and the red down blanket just made me feel right at home. Two thumbs up on the bed! Breakfast is in the morning at your leisure. Simply let Gerald know what time you would like to eat and he will prepare it at that time. Gerald cooked a warm meal each day (eggs, fresh toast, bacon, sausage, tomato, the whole gambit) along with having different types of oatmeal to select from. The breakfast was delicious and everything was organic.
Our last night we wanted to express our thanks to Gerald, so we invited Gerald to dinner and we ate at Fletcher's another upscale eatery. Fletcher's is a seafood restaurant that is excellent!! By the time we had to depart, it was a sad goodbye as we had grown so fond of Gerald. We left Gerald a note in the morning, since we had to leave so early and Gerald left us freshly made blueberry muffins for our journey home. I plan on visiting Edinburgh again in 2008, for two reasons, to enjoy the city and visit my new friend. I would not stay anywhere else in Edinburgh after the great hospitality we enjoyed at Gerald's Place.

  • Liked — I loved how personable the stay was. The Mi Casa, Su casa attitude of the B&B.
  • Disliked — No complaints
