After doing research on Tripadvisor I decided to book my stay in Edinburgh at Gerald's Place. This is the best decision we made. We arrived in Edinburgh late in the morning, after a long overnight flight, we were greeted by a very cheerful Gerald. Gerald immediately took us under his wing. We were showed to our room, which had all of the amenities that a hotel would have (i.e. T.V., coffee maker, and shower gel, shampoo etc). Gerald did a short introduction, handed us a very easy to read city map, and had laid out many helpful booklets, and guides about Edinburgh. This was very handy. Gerald also, gave us ours keys immediately so we could come and go as we please during our stay. After the brief introduction we napped for two hours and then awoke to explore the city. It was a pleasant surprise that Gerald's Place is actually in the middle of EVERYTHING! The B&B is only two blocks from Princess Street, where all your shopping can be done. Over the bridge from Princess St is the Royal Mile where you'd find Edinburgh Castle and Hollyrood Palace. We did not have to worry about spending extra money on cabs. Gerald's Place is in a top location, you can walk everywhere. Also, please do try to get to Bertlini's restaurant. The restaurant is at the end of the street from the B&B. It is an upscale Italian restaurant with homemade meals. The food is impeccable, and at the end of your meal the chef will come around to your table to insure the food was made to your likening. Now, one thing to note that in Edinburgh you need to make your reservations before you go out to dinner. If you mention this to Gerald in the morning he will be more then happy to book your table for you.
After the long days we spent touring the city, it was nice to come back to Gerald's Place. This was the first time that we booked at a B&B we usually stay at upscale hotels. I did not expect to sleep in a bed that was soooo comfortable. I swear I slept like a baby each night. The bed was very comfortable, and the red down blanket just made me feel right at home. Two thumbs up on the bed! Breakfast is in the morning at your leisure. Simply let Gerald know what time you would like to eat and he will prepare it at that time. Gerald cooked a warm meal each day (eggs, fresh toast, bacon, sausage, tomato, the whole gambit) along with having different types of oatmeal to select from. The breakfast was delicious and everything was organic.
Our last night we wanted to express our thanks to Gerald, so we invited Gerald to dinner and we ate at Fletcher's another upscale eatery. Fletcher's is a seafood restaurant that is excellent!! By the time we had to depart, it was a sad goodbye as we had grown so fond of Gerald. We left Gerald a note in the morning, since we had to leave so early and Gerald left us freshly made blueberry muffins for our journey home. I plan on visiting Edinburgh again in 2008, for two reasons, to enjoy the city and visit my new friend. I would not stay anywhere else in Edinburgh after the great hospitality we enjoyed at Gerald's Place.
