After doing research on Tripadvisor I decided to book my stay in Edinburgh at Gerald's Place. This is the best decision we made. We arrived in Edinburgh late in the morning, after a long overnight flight, we were greeted by a very cheerful Gerald. Gerald immediately took us under his wing. We were showed to our room, which had all of the amenities that a hotel would have (i.e. T.V., coffee maker, and shower gel, shampoo etc). Gerald did a short introduction, handed us a very easy to read city map, and had laid out many helpful booklets, and guides about Edinburgh. This was very handy. Gerald also, gave us ours keys immediately so we could come and go as we please during our stay. After the brief introduction we napped for two hours and then awoke to explore the city. It was a pleasant surprise that Gerald's Place is actually in the middle of EVERYTHING! The B&B is only two blocks from Princess Street, where all your shopping can be done. Over the bridge from Princess St is the Royal Mile where you'd find Edinburgh Castle and Hollyrood Palace. We did not have to worry about spending extra money on cabs. Gerald's Place is in a top location, you can walk everywhere. Also, please do try to get to Bertlini's restaurant. The restaurant is at the end of the street from the B&B. It is an upscale Italian restaurant with homemade meals. The food is impeccable, and at the end of your meal the chef will come around to your table to insure the food was made to your likening. Now, one thing to note that in Edinburgh you need to make your reservations before you go out to dinner. If you mention this to Gerald in the morning he will be more then happy to book your table for you.
After the long days we spent touring the city, it was nice to come back to Gerald's Place. This was the first time that we booked at a B&B we usually stay at upscale hotels. I did not expect to sleep in a bed that was soooo comfortable. I swear I slept like a baby each night. The bed was very comfortable, and the red down blanket just made me feel right at home. Two thumbs up on the bed! Breakfast is in the morning at your leisure. Simply let Gerald know what time you would like to eat and he will prepare it at that time. Gerald cooked a warm meal each day (eggs, fresh toast, bacon, sausage, tomato, the whole gambit) along with having different types of oatmeal to select from. The breakfast was delicious and everything was organic.
Our last night we wanted to express our thanks to Gerald, so we invited Gerald to dinner and we ate at Fletcher's another upscale eatery. Fletcher's is a seafood restaurant that is excellent!! By the time we had to depart, it was a sad goodbye as we had grown so fond of Gerald. We left Gerald a note in the morning, since we had to leave so early and Gerald left us freshly made blueberry muffins for our journey home. I plan on visiting Edinburgh again in 2008, for two reasons, to enjoy the city and visit my new friend. I would not stay anywhere else in Edinburgh after the great hospitality we enjoyed at Gerald's Place.

  • Liked — I loved how personable the stay was. The Mi Casa, Su casa attitude of the B&B.

Gerald's place is a delight. We stayed there the weekend of a rugby international which thankfully Ireland won, so we didn't get to see much sights, however, Gerald had so much information to give us if we had wanted to sightsee.
The room was lovely with a big comfy bed and an ensuite which had shampoo, conditioner and showergel provided, which was great as I had forgotten my own. There is also tea and coffee making facilities, tv, video player, hairdryer and access to laptop with internet connection.
The breakfast was superb - all organic - and included porridge, cereals, scrambled egg, sausages, tomatoes etc. He was very welcoming even giving us a bottle of wine on arrival. It is a very clean place and the location is excellent. I would highly recommend this place for everthing.

My friend and I stayed at Gerald's Place for 3 nights. Needless to say Gerald's Place did not disappoint. The room was nice and the beds were very comfortable. We were within walking distance to all the sites and the train station.

We did not have the pleasure of meeting Gerald as he was traveling abroad. His sister Gloria filled in. Gloria was fantastic. She prepared a wonderful breakfast each morning (the haggis was delicious) and offered excellent site seeing advice. We truly enjoyed conversing with her. We had a very early departure and Gloria was kind enough to supply two muffins for our train trip and see us off. We will return to Edinburgh and will stay at Gerald's Place.

Me and a friend have just spent 4 nights at Geraldsplace and were not disappointed. It is ranked number 1 for a reason. When we arrived, Gerald left us with lots of leaflets and info about place to visit and eat. He even gave us a bottle of wine.

The beds are the most comfy I have ever slept in. A great nights sleep is guaranteed. The facilities in the room are also great. T.V with DVD/Video player, freeview box, fridge containing milk & filtered water, kettle for making tea/coffee, the list goes on!

Breakfast is where Gerald really excels himself. Everything available is organic even down to the tomato ketchup. Anything you could possibly want for breakfast is on offer: porridge, oats, fresh fruit, yoghurts, fruit juices, toast, bacon, sausage, egg. Gerald even gave us double portions on our last day.

The location is excellent, a quiet street about a 5 minute walk from Princes Street which is where most of the shops are.

If you are going to Edinburgh, this is the place to stay. Next time I come to Edinburgh, I know where I'll be staying.

While searching for a honeymoon destination, we found Geraldsplace on Tripadvisor. We could not have asked for a better experience! We honeymooned during New Year's week, and the rates were excellent as were the accomodations. The rooms were great, especially the showers! It was absolutely refreshing to have a power shower...sometimes showers can be a pain, but definitely not at Geraldsplace. There was a tv, vcr, and dvd player in our room, and Gerald offered a slew of movies for us to borrow. Our favorite part of Geraldsplace was the BREAKFAST. It was absolutely fabulous! One morning, I was feeling a bit ill, and was really upset that I couldn't finish the breakfast. Gerald serves up several options of cereals, yogurt, fruits, juices and condiments to go along with freshly cooked eggs, bacon, sausage, and grilled tomatoes. It was hands down the best meal of the day.
Now, the trip wouldn't have been as wonderful if Gerald had not been the host. The day we arrived in Edinburgh, we found that some of our luggage hadn't arrived. Being our honeymoon, we were pretty bummed. The next day, it still hadn't arrived. While we were out exploring, Gerald went to the airport, himself, in the rain, to go and get my luggage. Then, a couple of days later, we checked our online banking and realized that someone had stolen our checking account number and purchased thousands of dollars of farming equipment. Gerald was more than willing to let us use his phone for several hours to sort this issue out. Thanks to him, we could handle the situation, and get on with our trip without having to worry.
The experience that we had in Edinburgh was so much better than a traditional hotel experience. The interaction we had with locals and people from all over the world was truly delightful.
Needless to say, we were sad to leave. If we have it our way, we will definitely return to see Gerald again.
