Both me and my wife stayed at Gerard's for 3 nights and it felt like we had a second home away from home during this time.
We stayed in a room facing the back of the house and the window was facing another residence. Because of the way houses are sloping in Edinburgh, even though the room was technically in the basement, the view was looking downwards, like on a second floor. It was a nice view, except there was minor construction on-going and scaffolding was blocking our view partially.
The room was very cosy and adequate. There was free wi-fi, which certainly help, scotch to warm the belly and abundant tea, coffee, shortbread to help yourself to. Because it was our honeymoon, Gerard threw in a bottle of wine and we thought it was a nice touch!
But that said, Gerard's Place is all about the man himself and what a warm welcome we got when we arrived. Info, maps and advise were offered without us asking and it certainly helps one when one is new in town.
There was however things we felt could be better. Because we were carrying many luggages, it became a long and tedious journey to reach Gerard's. On the other hand, it was also a plus because the location was quiet and serene.
We were slightly dissappointed, however, when we did not get a en-suite bathroom even though we requested for one. Only on the second night, were we able to change rooms.
But that said, Gerard's is still the place to be and the warm hospitality our dear host showed us far exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend this place as a base to explore Edinburgh.
