Both me and my wife stayed at Gerard's for 3 nights and it felt like we had a second home away from home during this time.

We stayed in a room facing the back of the house and the window was facing another residence. Because of the way houses are sloping in Edinburgh, even though the room was technically in the basement, the view was looking downwards, like on a second floor. It was a nice view, except there was minor construction on-going and scaffolding was blocking our view partially.

The room was very cosy and adequate. There was free wi-fi, which certainly help, scotch to warm the belly and abundant tea, coffee, shortbread to help yourself to. Because it was our honeymoon, Gerard threw in a bottle of wine and we thought it was a nice touch!

But that said, Gerard's Place is all about the man himself and what a warm welcome we got when we arrived. Info, maps and advise were offered without us asking and it certainly helps one when one is new in town.

There was however things we felt could be better. Because we were carrying many luggages, it became a long and tedious journey to reach Gerard's. On the other hand, it was also a plus because the location was quiet and serene.

We were slightly dissappointed, however, when we did not get a en-suite bathroom even though we requested for one. Only on the second night, were we able to change rooms.

But that said, Gerard's is still the place to be and the warm hospitality our dear host showed us far exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend this place as a base to explore Edinburgh.

It is the man himself that really makes this place what it is. He is incredibly welcoming, accomodating and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Edinburgh.
The location is perfect, and the rooms are very comfortable with everything you could possibly need for a city break (and more!). If you absolutely MUST have an en-suite room when you travel you should check with Gerald which rooms are available - he has two, one of which is en-suite and the other where the bathroom is just outside the room in the hallway area. It wasn't an issue at all for us, but I guess it depends on the traveller.
Breakfast was great and set us up for a day of sightseeing perfectly.
We look forward to seeing you again some time Gerald!!

that I would make some comments, even tho we were not able to book reservations at his "place". It sure seems like we will miss a great experience.
However, I do want to say that communication with Gerald could not of gone more smoothly. When the dates that we needed were already booked, Gerald was gracious enough to recommend 2 other locations. We did end up booking an apartment with one of the nice ladies that he recommended and we are really looking forward to our trip to Edinburgh.

Flying directly to Edinburgh from Australia we certainly hoped our choice of B&B would be everything other reviewers on tripadvisor had said it would be. We were not to be dissappointed. From the moment we stepped into Gerald's wonderful home we knew we had chosen a great place to spend our 4 days in Edinburgh. Gerald was an entertaining, generous and kind host who served the most wonderful breakfasts! So much choice, all fresh, organic and delicious! While Edinburgh turned on some fantastic weather for early April sightseeing it was hard to leave our temporary home. It is full of amazing collections that Gerald has accumulated over the years. Our room was downstairs and the special bed and pillows extremely comfortable. No jetlag for us - we slept like logs! For a place to stay with the host who provides the most - there is no place like Geralds. Thank you Gerald... even David has remembered his stay with you!

Gerald's place is the best place to stay in Edinburgh!! I found Gerald's on TripAdvisor, and I can't find a negative thing to say about the place. At first I was disappointed Gerald wasn't going to be there (because I had read on here how great he was), but then we met Justyna, who was a wonderful host. No offence Gerald, but we didn't miss you after we had Justyna's cooking :-) My wife and I stayed in one of the two downstairs rooms, and my parents stayed in the other. We had the whole bottom floor to ourselves, and everything was perfect (I have to say, it was MUCH cleaner and more comfortable than any B&B I have stayed in after 2 years of traveling Europe)! The breakfasts were more than generous and tasted great ... fresh fruit from the markets, haggis, eggs, fresh bacon ... amazing! We ate breakfast ... and weren't hungry until dinner! The location of Gerald's place was perfect. It took us only a matter of minutes ... which is perfect after a full Scottish breakfast ... to walk to anywhere we wanted to go. A few nights after we stayed at Gerald's, we got stuck in a Holiday Inn, and were very disappointed we didn't have another night at Gerald's. Thanks for everything Gerald & Justyna, and I promise that we'll be staying at your place the next time we're in Edinburgh!
