We stayed at Gerald's Place when we were in Edinburgh to see Leonard Cohen. We were there for only one night, and how we regretted it as soon as we arrived at the B&B.
Gerald greeted us at the door, and was immediately and from that point onwards utterly charming. Bubbling over with local knowledge and advice, Gerald was also a master of being available but not inescapable.
In terms of the B&B itself, it's pretty much flawless. Wonderfully quiet, impeccably clean, and in a handy location. It's a 5-minute walk to the main shopping street (Princes Street), and from there, galleries, museums, and the unavoidable castle are all within easy walking distance. But, at the end of the day, you're not stuck in the noisy centre - just a few minutes' walk away, and in beautiful, quiet surroundings.
Our room was spotless, with one of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever slept on, a mini-fridge, a fantastic shower and, although we didn't need it, a satellite television. And, most charmingly of all, Gerald also gave us the wonderful choice of a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates, even though we were only staying for one night. Given Gerald's (excellent) recommendation of a nearby BYOB restaurant, we opted for the wine, and were not disappointed.
The second part of the B&B (the breakfast bit) was sheer perfection. Grilled, for the most part, fresh, varied, and sourced from local vendors, the various elements were all equally delicious, and set us up perfectly for a day's sight-seeing and, ultimately, Leonard Cohen.
I simply cannot recommend this B&B, and its charming owner, enough. Just don't make the same mistake as us - stay for more than one night - stay as long as you possibly can...!
