“Gerald's Place: An exceptional place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Gerald's Place is friendly, homey, and charming. If the only thing keeping you from Edinburgh is finding a safe and cozy spot in the middle of everything, it's time to book your tickets! Gerald's made the sweetest home away from home and loves to make your experience memorable. His aim is to make every guest's stay wonderful, from great beds, to delicious breakfast, and wonderful company. He knows the history, the best places to eat and antique shops to peruse. He'll get you oriented and send you off to see this amazing city, and when you're exhausted from your day out, there will be tea and the nicest beds you'll find around.

Room Tip: There are two rooms, one has a small window facing the street (a little noisier) with the bathroom i...

"GERALD'S PLACE - AN EXCEPTIONAL PLACE TO STAY" thank you csip - more truly it was you who were so sweet and charming - your sister too, and your amazing Aunt : it is my guests that make geraldsplace.com 'an exceptional place to stay', and it is wonderful that they return again and again to further explore this incredible City - steeped in history, every corner a mystery, so much beauty : and do you remember the Edinburgh Tattoo? the back-stage tour? the front row centre stand seats? A1 A2 A3 A4? and those amazing Mongolians 'mixing it' with The Royal Regiment of Scotland's marching band of drums, pipes and flutes - altogether an inspiring occasion - and that was just ONE of the treats - another was the walk up Calton Hill !
wishing you all that's best in your wonderful life ahead, and I hope we may all meet again soon, here or there Gerald

We've been known to arrange the dates of our stay in Edinburgh so we can stay at Gerald's Place. This b&b has seemed like home ever since we discovered it back in 1998. The best thing about the place is, of no surprise, Gerald, who has become a dear friend. He does everything he can to make his guests feel at home--from a most delicious breakfast to wine and scotch in the room. The rooms are most comfortable, a place to relax, to recover, to gain strength for the next outing in a city that has an amazing number of places to explore and things to do. We spent 2 weeks in August at Gerald's during the International Festival, and the location is perfect--far enough from the crowds that I feel as if we live in Edinburgh but close enough to the center that we can walk to almost everything. Of all the places we've stayed all over the world, Gerald's Place ranks number 1.

"THE ONLY PLACE WE STAY AT IN EDINBURGH" - "Gerald's Place ranks number 1" : my dear friends - travellingrudy [S & S] - a big heartfelt thanks, and congratulations as you approach your 40th wedding anniversary, and all the way ! - I'll be there in Santa Fe ! : you are truly a top contributor to Trip Advisor with an amazing 66 reviews, in 19 cities, achieving 48 helpful votes [few reviews achieve even ONE helpful vote] - and your word, or words, carry huge weight : my aim has been always to be the best, without compromise - 365 days over 16 years and still going strong! and I love it - the challenge, and especially engendering the feeling, that for guests it is a 'home from home' - a b&b within a home : next year will bring TWO new gifts for my guests at geraldsplace.com - trams from airport to St Andrews Square [just 5 minutes walk to my b&b -ALL DOWNHILL] , and a new single malt welcome - 24yr Highland Park - beat that? no sip it ! it's the very best - blessings Gerald

Whenever I'm in Edinburgh, I stay at Gerald's Place. Conveniently located in New Town, it is private, quiet, comfortable, attractive and clean. Wonderful restaurants, museums, Old Town attractions and Waverly Station are within easy walking distance. The room rate is very reasonable. Gerald is a thoughtful, gracious and informative host and provides an unparalleled breakfast (along with a complimentary bottle of wine and decanter of scotch).

We stayed at Gerald's Place for three nights. The room was beautifully appointed - it had everything we needed. The complimentary bottle of wine upon our arrival, the daily decanter of scotch, and specialty teas were a real treat. The extensive selection of toiletries was unbelievable. Gerald was a very gracious host. He took the time to explain which Edinburgh highlights we should visit and had several restaurant recommendations. The breakfast was terrific - a wide variety of excellent quality food made from mostly organic ingredients - I even enjoyed the fried haggis! We would definitely stay at Gerald's Place again if we visit Edinburgh.

Seriously our most comfortable visit abroad, including stays in some 5-star hotels. It is quiet, comfortable, scrupulously clean, half a block from 2 fabulous restaurants and within walking distance of everything! Gerald has thoughtfully stocked bedroom and bath with anything you may need and might have forgotten; the walls are full of lovely artwork, and his full English breakfasts with homemade bread are wonderful. Gerald himself is a delight, and he and his staff felt like family. We're looking forward to returning!

" THE MOST COMFORTABLE I'VE EVER BEEN OVERSEAS" thanks dear M & L - comfort is our priority, whether it's very best beds [top quality Vi-Spring no less] : whether it's a very best breakfast - mostly organic and all scrumptuous : whether it's the comfort of feeling 'just like home' - among friends, new or old on a 2nd / 3rd visit - you are always welcome Gerald

This was our second stay at Gerald's Place, for 6 nights during the Edinburgh festivals in August. It is in a lovely safe location within a few minutes walk of the main station and shops, with plenty of excellent restaurants and cafes within 5-10 minutes. Most Fringe events were also less than 20 minutes away by foot. Gerald's rooms are fantastically equipped, and you will not need to bring any equipment from home. There are ample supplies in the bathroom of everything you can think of, and the beds are really comfortable with top quality bedding. Breakfast is great, with home made smoothies, 100% fruit juice, four cereals, fresh fruit, yogurts, croissants, home made bread, jams and a cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon, with an option of smoked salmon. You will not go hungry! The rooms are also stocked up with biscuits, chocolates, tea and coffee with fresh milk in a mini-fridge, and a small flask of whisky. Gerald is a fantastic host, or should I say, friend. He is very knowledgeable on so many topics, and has many wonderful stories to tell from his past. He loves collecting art, and his home is a tribute to a very full life. He is also a perfect gentleman. He has two helpers, who are also delightful, and a stay at Gerald's place really feels like a stay with family. We look forward to next year.

Room Tip: Both rooms are good. The front room has an inclusive bathroom, but is slightly noisier as it faces t...
