“Advertised as a hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

We booked through late rooms and it was advertised as a hotel, once we got there we realised it was actually student halls. The accommodation was basic and clean, the breakfast was good, a lot to choose from but the restaurant was very busy and difficult to find a seat!

Its wonderful to stay there. Very comfortable and good rooms. The bathroom is detached and thats the only downer. But its common for university accommodations. The location is beautiful and peaceful. They offer complimentary breakfast.

We have just checked into our twin room and are 100% thrilled with the quality of the facilities and the excellent reception we received from Leon at the front desk (who is a fountain of knowledge about Edinburgh, with a fab personality). The room is spotless, the wireless internet is super-fast and the information pamphlets provided are very helpful. Highly recommended.

The Halls are a good standard of student accommodation with the added bonus that the location, buffet breakfast, staff and campus are all excellent. Located within a short walking distance of the Meadows and under the shadow of Arthur's seat (to walk off that enormous breakfast), the Halls are within easy reach of some less well know Edinburgh delights. Take the short stroll through the quiet St Leonard's streets opposite Holyrood Park Road and have a delicious and excellent value vegetarian lunch (if you still have room!) upstairs at the Engine Shed, a community enterprise that supports young people with learning difficulties into the world of work. Ian Rankin had Inspector Rebus lunching there, as indeed did Rankin himself. Then pop into the delightful Nomad's Tent around the corner on St Leonard's Lane - a fair trading warehouse of tribal art; beautiful Shiraz rugs, Rajasthan painted furniture and gorgeous silver jewellery. Stroll on across the road to the Meadows stopping for a coffee and Czech cake at the characterful Victor Hugo's and admire the fine Georgian architecture along the way or go straight ahead to reach the Scottish Parliament building, entering the development via the less well known concrete undercroft - some compare it to a 60's urban subway; it certainly makes a stark contrast with the green landscape glimpsed beyond.

I booked this through EBookers, and lets just say no where was there mentioned that we would be staying in student accomodation. It was sold as a hotel, that looked basic, but comfortable. This is not what we got. The staff at the halls were second to none, and were incredibly helpful and friendly. The room was fine for the night, very basic, but somewhere to sleep, but we just were not prepared for it. House keeping woke up the whole corridor at 9, which was not a nice surprise.

This place is perfectly acceptable for what it is, but i think you can get BnBs etc for the same price in the centre of town.

As a student, Pollocks Halls provides nice accommodation, although 2 sharing a twin room would be quite cramped. Central location. The grounds are lovely - a mix of what look like Early Victorian building with modern dormitories. Really nice from that point of view.

As a business traveller, it was ok, just scratching the surface of 3 stars. The rooms are basic, but clean. The beds are firm, if you like that. However there is a student 'air' - a mild pong. Nothing terrible but definitely there. Wifi in the rooms is pretty fast, although I didn't download much. The reception staff, all students, are friendly and helpful. I felt the conference facilities not really 'state of the art' as promised, but just adequate. I have to say the breakfast, although cafeteria style and institutional looking, was fab. Great English and European selections, coffee, tea, juice, etc, etc. Really nice - surprisingly so.

I'm sure Edinburgh offers better accommodation, and at £60 a night, high for what's on offer at Pollocks, but it's fine. Just go in with managed expectations and you won't be disappointed.

Girls weekend in Edinburgh and just stayed 1 night. A little bit away from where we were having our day / evening entertainment so had to use taxis. We were in the student accommodation, obviously a single student room with a 2nd single bed added, which was fine for 1 night. I wasn't aware that there was a hotel part also. I wouldn't have liked this if I was there with my hubby or for longer that a couple of nights. Room was very clean and everything was working fine. Clean towels, tea and coffee facilities, Breakfast was fine too, plenty of choice. No problems leaving luggage in storage when we checked out until we were ready for going home.
