“Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2006

My boyfriend and I stayed at the hostel while on a booked Edinburgh Tattoo tour with To Deck. We stayed in a 8-bed mixed dorm with ensuite on the 8th floor (there is no elevator!). The bunk beds were average and the linen clean and warm.

They had secure boxes under your bunk to store things. Most of them were broken, so we couldnt lock up our valuables.

Breakfast was below average. Plain cereal and DIY toast in the bar with cheap instat coffee.

The best thing about the hostel was the location. Just a short walk up the street and you are on the Royal Mile.

Stayed here with 13 mates on a stag weekend 23-25 Jun 2006. The hostel is well situated in a central location, literally seconds walk from Waverly station. Overall, the staff were friendly, and very tolerant of the banter and tomfoolery of 14 blokes in drink-fuelled high spirits. The facilities were good, but basic - our room had an ensuite shower and toilet, which was a definite plus. The only negative was a misunderstanding regarding the number of beds in one of our rooms. We were told it was a 6-bed dorm, however there were 8 beds - one of which was occupied by a stranger to us. The staff did offer to move him if it was a problem for us or him - but in the end this wasn't deemed necessary.

i have just got back from a two night stay at the hostel. As i was visiting with my college it is a good alternative as it is cheap, however i am sure everyone who went with the college agreed that they would rather pay more to stay in a hotel.
The staff were so rude. They didnt care who you were and what you needed.
I was waiting at the bar for a drink when i spotted mould growing in one of the jugs that was holding pineapple juice. it was quite clear that it was dirty and it wouldnt have taken much to clean it, however the barman filled it up and put the lid back on! how ever that hostel was voted in the top ten hostels is beyond me.
The hotel smelt of disinfectent which was a gud sign at first. It smelt horrible but atleast its clean! that was not the case so god knows what they were disinfecting cos it wasnt my room. The bathroom was dirty. there was dust settling on the sink and toilet so god knows when that was last cleaned. The beds were so uncomfy. you could feel every spring in them and the room was tiny. There were four girls staying in one room and there wasnt enough for one person staying there.
there was a good selection of food available at the bar however it took about half an hour to arrive. when it did arrive it was brought from the kitchen which was up a flight of stairs , took outside and then brought through another door into the bar. by this time it was stone cold. surely there is some health and safety policy to stop you from doing a detour with customers food.
overall i would not stay here again and i would not even recommend it to a tramp. hes better off with his park bench.

Myself and three other mates stayed there on the bank holiday weekend in June. It was my stag weekender and we booked into St. Christopher's Inn for two nights.

Lets put it this way... We are so disappointed with the hostel that we are writing this on the day we got home as so to let other people know how bad it was!

In all fairness it is right bang in the heart of Edinburgh, around the corner from the station and the bus stops on the bridge and across the way from Edinburgh dungeons, which is very handy, but that is the only thing that this hostel has going for it!

The American guy that was at reception was the most ignorant and unhelpful man that we have ever met. He just did not want to be there.

He gave us a keycard to leave our bags in the luggage room and told us not to come back until 3pm to check in. This was at 10am. We thought okay, as there is loads to do in the city, so we headed off. When we came back and got our keycards for our rooms, we found ourselfs in a 10 bed dorm (5 bunkbeds) that looked as though they were used in world war two, and the en-suite shower and toilet were filthy. There was also a shower room that wreaked of mould on our floor with 4 showers the size of small phone boxes that had push button starts that you had to keep pushed in to work.

The included breakfasts were just tea/coffee and cereal, and we had to pay an extra £3.50 for a fry.

I have stayed in many hostels in my time, and some pretty bad ones too, but St. Christopher's Inn is the worst. There attitude is get as many people in for as much as you can and dont keep the place up to date or clean.

Edinburgh is a fantastic city, do visit it... but dont stay here!

This hostel is right next to the mile. The bar below is perfect to start your night, nice bartenders at Belushi's. The hostel was clean, and had a private bathroom. Keep in mind you can walk to the Castle and everything is really close. This is a hostel so you will be sharing a room with others, our room had 8 beds which is a pretty good number. Would stay here again for sure. Real secure and not too expensive. Have a great time going out.

Do not stay at this hostel unless you want a cramped, dirty, uncomfortable place to stay! Great location (immediately across the street from Waverly Train Station) but uncomfortable to live in--sinks are the size of small cereal bowls, unisex bathrooms, and showers with buttons you have to repeatedly push if you want continuos water. Bar downstairs is fine for meeting people, but food service is horribly slow. No hand soap in the bathrooms, and knowing that no one washes their hands makes entire hostel seem dirty.
The only plus besides the location is the staff, who are extremely friendly and helpful. Also there is a luggage room in which visitors can store their things before and after checkout, which helps.
Sheets were clean, but overall it was a bad hostel experience. "Breakfast" consists of boring cereal and pieces of toast that you have to make yourself, so don't expect a continental breakfast like I did. Internet is available but quite expensive. Do yourself a favor and investigate other hostels before settling on this one. If this is the 6th rated hostel in the world, I'd hate to see #1.

Dorms are too small to appropriately accomodate six people. Bring your own towels. Did not like the set up of toilets, there should be a partition between the commode and the shower not all in one. Somewhat noisy. A bit overpriced for what you get. Probably would not stay here again.
