We knew we were in for a memorable time the moment we were greeted by their amazing doorman. Looking like a character from a cold war spy film in his black trenchcoat and matching trilby he clearly loves his job and provides an exceptional combination of customer service and good humour.
This hotel certainly has the wow factor and manages to be incredibly cool without being pretentious. The decor is deeply luxurious but not stuffy or overpowering. The staff are highly efficient and professional but also friendly and relaxed - and there's plenty of them too! The location is also perfect with all the shopping, eating, culture and nightlife you could want within easy walking distance.
We had one of the suites on the third floor overlooking the street and it was superb. Spacious, comfortable and stylish with lots of special touches. The balcony on its own is the size of a standard hotel room so when added to the already large room it gives you a massive amount of space to relax in. My girlfriend has also asked me to emphasise that the bath is "a woman's dream" (which explains why she spent so much time in it!)
Outside our room was an area called The Snug. It's a very stylish open lounge area with an honesty bar where you help yourself to drinks and write it on the tab.
I know that some reviews have mentioned the noise levels on this side of the hotel but I didn't notice anything louder than the ambient traffic noise. Personally, when I'm staying in a city hotel I like hearing the sounds of the city, it helps me sleep!
So with all this perfection it was a real pity to find that this hotel does have what I consider to be a major flaw - their TV system. The choice of channels is far too limited (no movie or kids channels) and the ropey picture quality from the tiny LCD screen is unacceptable in a hotel of this standard. As a broadcast engineer I know that it's simply because they've tried to cut corners and put in a cheap distribution system.
They may think that a hotel telly is not that important when they've got a cinema on one side and a theatre on the other but if that's their thinking then they're missing the point. These rooms are superbly appointed in every other way and they really deserve a decent quality plasma screen fed with a broad range of clean, digital channel sources - it's nothing less than most of their customers would have at home. What they have at the moment is just letting the side down and I really hope they fix it soon.
