I stayed in Room 10 at the Glasshouse for 2 nights in September, as my partner & I had come to Edinburgh for a wedding, and thought we would treat ourselves to a little luxury.
Firtsly, the good points: very central location 5 mins walk from Waverley Station, and the Airlink bus stop (to get to & from the airport - only £3 each way, and takes the same time as a taxi!), very near the Georgian part of Edinburgh, with some great shopping - Princes St, Harvey Nichols etc. Great modern hotel, with a lovely large roof garden - we booked our room through Expedia, and paid £15 extra to upgrade to an Executive Room, so we had direct access to the garden. Great toiletries in the room (Korres, an organic brand), and a lovely large glass shower, seperate bath, and fabulous underfloor heating in the bathroom - a real treat. Staff friendly & helpful.
And now for the not so good: First off, the hotel is built above an 'entertainment complex' called the Omni Centre - it houses a multiplex cinema, a 'Walkabout' bar, and some other bars/restaurants & clubs. This makes for a noisy night-time environment around the hotel, and jusging from some of the other reviews, some rooms are pretty noisy. Room 10 is not too bad, but you can feel the rumble & shake from the cinema, and you can just about hear the pumping music from the bar. Our bathroom venitlator was slightly noisy,so this probably helped mask the club noise a bit! Also, the hotel uses vacuum plumbing, which is great for saving water (and the planet), but makes a loud sucking noise (think airplane toilets) when you flush the toilet, or drain the bath, shower or sink.
And finally, the bed is really soft. I prefer a firm bed, and this was like sleeping on a giant squashy pillow - OK if you like that sort of thing, but if you have a bad back, its not at all comfortable.
Overall, the hotel is very nice & on the surface, luxurious. But all these little niggles add up, and I don't think that I would have been so tolerant had I paid the full rack rate for the room.
