Stayed at the Glasshouse over New Year 2008 and would like to give a succinct review.
Pros:
The hotel itself is very attractive and well located for a hotel in Edinburgh.
Our suite (the Glenlivet suite) was gorgeous. It had an extremely comfortable bed, great lounging area, swivel tv, room safe, mini bar, complimentary tea and coffee facilities, various lighting, switch-controlled curtains, walk-in shower, bath, wardrobe, iron and hairdryer. The bed deserves an extra mention because it was large and gorgeous...mmmm.mmmm.mmmmmmmm.
An efficient, complimentary shoe shine service.
Room service is delicious, (except the pepperoni pizza which is vile).
Breakfast is excellent and well worth ensuring it is including in your deal.
Cons:
Reception is just that. There is no concierge service which, for a 5* hotel, is a shame. We asked about the New Year festivities and received very little information to the point where we very nearly missed some very exciting festivities that happened right above the hotel but reception had no idea about.
Service is unreliable. For example on the first day, having been out for five hours, we had to ask for our room to be made up; on another day we had to ask for the complimentary water to be delivered; on another day we had to ask for a turn down service, etc etc . To cut a long story short we had to phone reception every day for something. Shame.
The roof garden is lame and is a wasted opportunity. So much more could be made of this potentially excellent feature.
We had been intrigued about the lack of a restaurant and the Honesty Bar feature as we enjoy our privacy. However, upon reflection, the hotel lacked a focal point. The Honesty Bar appeared to cause a great deal of consternation, with some residents unsure and uncomfortable about the set up.
Our overall assessment is 5* room with no more than 3* service and amenities.
