I booked a stay for my Fiance and I in the Holyrood Apartments / Aparthotel for a little Christmas shopping, and some sightseeing in Edinburgh. I chose an apartment purely because it rated highly on tripadvisor, and because it cost LESS than a 3* hotel.
I wasn't expecting much from the apartment. I figured that I'd be handed the key, and left to sort out dinner, finding a supermarket, etc. I was a little disappointed too by the exterior of the building. It's in the middle of old stone buildings, and looks kinda plain and 'office' like. But inside, it's marble, bright, airy and thoroughly plush.
We were led up to our apartment by the very friendly and chatty woman at the check in desk. She opened the door, showed us around the modern, clean, wooden floored, fantastic apartment, and suggested places to eat, buy groceries (if we needed anything other than the breakfast things in the fridge - yoghurts, bread, butter, cheese, jam, marmalade, cereals) and left us to chill out on the sofa. :)
Edinburgh city centre is only 5 minutes away, and to get to Princes street, you walk through cobbled streets, past huge old buildings, and little alleys ('Closes') which litter the old town. In other cities, these alleys would seem intimidating, with the remnants of last nights alcohol carry-out lining them, but I found Edinburgh to be clean, welcoming and friendly, inviting you to explore
I'm not usually impressed by Hotel rooms or Apartments, and usually never write a review, but I have to say that the friendly welcome I received from all the members of staff, with a 'hello' when they saw us walk in, the incredible apartment (with soft, clean bed linen, comfy sofa, tv/video, central heating (important!) and kitchen packed with appliances) and the whole package compelled me to write this one.
Perfect for a short or a long stay, and excellent value for money. The only minus point would be that it is slightly further out than some of the other hotels, by maybe 1 MINUTE walking time. It's quieter too though because of that.
