The Holyrood ApartHotel is hidden from the main steets (and somewhat hard to locate, as it's in the back of an alley called a "Close", but that's also what makes it an ideal place to stay. It's very secure, with ample parking, and no noise from Edinburgh's traffic.
It is quite a beautiful apartment suite (we had the two bedroom, two bathroom one, kitchenette, fully- equipped for breakfast and snacks, living/dining area with great TV and sound system, and a safe for valuables.) The reception desk staff were very nice and helpful. Our first stay in Scotland felt like home! Nearby is Edinburgh (and also Holyrood) Castles. But our favourite outing had to be Mary King's Close-- a tour of an underground street that was home to victims of the bubonic and pneumonic plagues. Very entertaining and knowledgeable tour guides made it worthwhile.
Also,we booked a table at the Witchery Restaurant (near Edinburgh Castle) online a month in advance of our trip over, because it's extremely popular. It's very old and quite the romantic gourmet spot. Celebrities have been known to dine there, and it's no wonder!! The food was well-prepared and delicious, and the serving staff very attentive. Not cheap, but quite the treat!

  • Liked — Well-appointed suite, great staff, prime location in the city
  • Disliked — The washer/dryer machine in the kitchen was great for washing only--clothes never fully dried. Had to use heated towel bars in the bathroom to finish-- thank God I had two days to dry my clothes1

Edinburgh can be a nightmare for hotels - at least double the price of anywhere else in Scotland - so the Holyrood is a nice surprise. For the same price per person as a B&B in South Edinburgh you can have a super smart two-double bedroom flat with a full kitchen, living room and dining table, two ultra-modern bathrooms and all the mod cons that a weary traveller could want (even a washing machine - total luxury after 10 days on the road!). Plus the location can't be beat - just off the Royal Mile, a 5 minute walk from Holyrood Palace, with taxis and buses just outside the door. The only possible drawback is the price - we got a good deal in July and there were enough in our group to make it a relative bargain for an expensive city. But the prices rise steeply at other times of the year -- they must get a lot of business from the Parliament around the corner -- and there are some hefty extra charges that can add up very quickly (parking fees were particularly high, and be careful about agreeing to the continental breakfast basket...). And for a place that doesn't serve meals they have an annoying policy of charging by the person -- so the exact same two bed flat will cost a lot more for four people than for two or three. It seems unfair when they're renting self-catering flats... and something tells me that Fringe-goers are secretly cramming 12 to a flat in August.

  • Liked — Excellent location
  • Disliked — Front desk staff could be a bit offhand and unhelpful

Stayed 3 nights with my wife and 2 young children. Liked it very much. Very Roomy (2 bedrooms, kitchen, and a living room). Helpful staff. Had videos for our kids to watch. So close to the royal mile I could slip out and see a site while the kids were watching Scooby Doo -- leaving kids with mom -- back before it ended. Pizza Express right across the street is a pretty good place to eat. My only complaint is that I found the electronics and plumbing somewhat baffling. Took me 45 minutes to figure out how to turn everything on.

We recently returned from a visit to Edinburgh. We booked for a week at the Aparthotel Holyrood based on the reviews read in Tripadvisor. Like others, I was a little disappointed when we initially drove up; however, the inside was lovely, clean and modern -- we were not disappointed. Driving up to the Aparthotel in a taxi is a little confusing; by car, you arrive at the hotel by a street which seems more like an alley. Once there and walking about, however, you appreciate the location -- just steps from the lower (East) end of the Royal Mile. A Starbucks was just around the corner, which made getting up in the morning easier for me! Staff is friendly. A computer in the reception area may be used at no charge by residents. My husband noted that you do not need an alarm clock or wake up call because if you leave your window open, the very noisy birds in the area will see to it that you arise! The bottom line is that, while this does not purport to be a five-star luxury accomodation (and, as stated in other reviews, the floors are very squeaky), I am picky and I thought it was a terrific, cute, clean, well-located place for my family to stay.

  • Liked — The kitchen was adorable and I loved the combination washer/dryer.
  • Disliked — Squeaky floors.
