I stayed at the Clarendon hotel on the 22nd and 23rd March 2006 for a short break with my boyfriend. The hotel is very conveniently located, both for transport to and from the airport (the airlink bus stop is right outside the hotel, only £5 return) and for exploring the city as it is on the doorstep of Princes street and has fantastic views of the castle just a stones throw away.
The reception staff were very friendly and any requests we made, such as iron/ironing board were promptly dealt with. The room was a very decent size, which may have been because, although we had booked a double room, we got a triple room, which was no problem as there was a double bed and a single bed. The single bed served us well as a place to dump our shopping bags!
The room and bathroom were both very clean and presentable and serviced each day. The breakfast, which was included in our rate of £40 per room per night, was lovely, although, as previous reviews have mentioned, you need to be specific about what quantity you want, if you say bacon and egg, you get one piece of bacon and one egg so if you like a big breakfast speak up! The service at breakfast was excellent considering all the meals are cooked to order, as opposed to a buffet style breakfast where the food has been lingering on the hotplate for a while. There were plenty of staff, all very helpful.
I was slightly concerned after booking this hotel to read the reviews on this site, but was pleased I stuck with it and didn't pay any more for another hotel as this was far and away the best deal available for my dates price-wise unless I stayed a bus ride away. £40 per room per night was great value for the service and location and the standard of the room, which could be compared to that of budget chains such as Travel Inn ie comfortable with no frills, if not a little better. I would definately recommend this hotel for the budget conscious traveller that doesn't like to compromise on location and/or standards.
