Stayed for a weekend arrived late on Saturday Night. Staff were very nice and polite. Rooms are small but average for 3 star. Rooms were very clean and cleaned each day. Breakfast was fresh and hot and the service was fast. (had to ask twice for browne toast though). The Hotel is very central to Princess street and near all the shops, bars and restaurant's. The night life was good on Sat night but the other nights were very quite. One thing to steer clear of is the Ghost tour called Old Reeky (or something like that).............it was crap, was realy taken for a ride there.

Needed a hotel last minute and booked the "3 star" Clarendon. This was a 2 star at best. The walls were peeling, the beds were small, the blankets needed cleaning--we slept in our clothes. The sheets did seem clean though. The worst part is that you have to park your car 5 blocks away at a public lot. This lot's exit insures that you get lost coming back to pick up anyone at the hotel. Also, no bellhop or rolling carts. Check in girl was very nice and they did have breakfast which was ok. Not exactly cheap for the nothing that you get. Book only in a BIG pinch.

The Clarendon is one of those "does what is says on the tin" hotels - its a central Edinburgh 3 star hotel - so its near enough to the railway station (15 minutes walk), near enough to the sights (15 minutes to the Castle, admittedly a climb the whole way), and clean, comfortable and safe but not high-frills. We got there early and left our luggage in the luggage room which is not brilliantly secure - they give you a passcode and you let yourself into the luggage room, which is near the restaurant (that said, we didnt lose anything). Our room was comfortable and clean and the breakfast was ok next morning. Staff were helpful when I needed to print out a document, although I had to email it to them first; but most friendly and helpful (appreciated!)

For what we paid for it, a good place to stay, but if you're in town just a night or two might be worth paying a bit extra and staying somewhere closer to the old part of town where all the tourist attractions and bars/restuarants are.

We arrived at the Clarendon for one night on the 14th August. We had booked some months earlier and a double room cost £125 including breakfast

On arrival we were allocated room 105 which we were told was a double room. On entering the room , we found that the bed was almost like a large single bed and in no way would i consider it a double bed at all. A quick walk down to reception to try and change the room was met with a "we are full sir, there are no other rooms available". This was during the Edinburgh Festival and I am sure that they were full....but not so much as a "sorryy" for the bed size

There were some stains in the bathroom ceiling and to my surprise no alarm clock in the room. The TV did not work properly as the aerial connection at the back was broken and loose. At breakfast the following morning, there was no butter available as they had "run out", I ordered my breakfas without tomato....and guess what, out came the breakfast with tomatoe..!!, admittedly a small thing , but annoying for me

As we were only staying one night and hotel rooms are at a premium in Edinburgh during the festival we decided to take all of the above on the chin.

Whats good about the Clarendon...The "airlink" bus from the airport stops almost outside the hotel and in returning to the airport, the pickup stop is as close too. The location is excellent and could not be better. When we checked in, I had asked for a room in a quiet area of the hotel, but we were given a first floor room facing the main street, from a noise perspective it was excellent, no noise at all and really quiet

Would we return...maybe, but only if they change the size of their "double beds"
