I had decided to take my partner (now ex - but not the hotels fault lol) away for our anniversary weekend. We spent the first night in Peebles at The Castle Venlaw (seperate review written). I had booked this hotel for its closeness to the city & I wanted a 5* hotel with an amazing room. On paper, or rather the internet, this hotel seemed to fit the bill. I booked the Ambassador suite with the bathroom in the middle of the room as this looked lovely with a bit of a twist! Upon arrival in Edinburgh we were pleasantly surprised by the easiness of parking outside the hotel. When we went to check-in we had a long wait as several international guests were checking in, and with their difficulties with english as well as the staff (eastern european) everyone seemed very confused! When we finally got to check-in it was a rather abrupt encounter and they didnt seem to care less. They were aware from contact with the hotel that it was a special occassion & of course that we had booked an upgraded room type, I dont expect to be grovelled over by any means but comman manners would of been nice!! We were handed our key and left to search for our room, no offer of help with our bags and there were not lifts available to our part of the hotel (not sure if there are in the other areas) we eventually gave up and asked a maid where our room was, to no avail (she didnt speak english) we finally found a gentleman who helped us and took us to our room. The room was freezing we ran around closing all the curtains trying to keep in some heat and turned on the radiators & fire, which i had to practically sit on to stop shivering. The room did look like the pictures, or it would have 10 years ago. I wasnt bothered that the room looked aged as this sometimes adds character & charm! I was disappointed that the room did not however have a shower, only a bath. Which I did not want to use as the water coming out the taps resembled pee!! I called the front desk to advise them of this discolouration & was advised in again a very abrupt manner that its because the pipes are old & rusty. You would think charging nearly £300 per night they would be able to rectify this?? We only ate once in the hotel which was a small snack on our day of arrival, we did not repeat the experience, it was not anything to write home about. I had also been impressed on-line by the "facilties" the hotel offered, swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna etc...
When we ventured to the pool & I was disgusted, it was located in the basement, tiles were chipped and missing, it was dirty and tiny! Scum was floating on the pool along with several old, used plasters. We only went to the pool the once, and I personally would have turned straight around & walked out but the ex-other half insisted on staying for a swim. I felt desperate for a good wash to scrub the filth off after this!
We had two nights here and I was glad when it came time to leave - with my purse £600 lighter I wish I had stayed at a travelodge as the experience would of probably been better!
Edinburgh however is a great city - JUST STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
