I had decided to take my partner (now ex - but not the hotels fault lol) away for our anniversary weekend. We spent the first night in Peebles at The Castle Venlaw (seperate review written). I had booked this hotel for its closeness to the city & I wanted a 5* hotel with an amazing room. On paper, or rather the internet, this hotel seemed to fit the bill. I booked the Ambassador suite with the bathroom in the middle of the room as this looked lovely with a bit of a twist! Upon arrival in Edinburgh we were pleasantly surprised by the easiness of parking outside the hotel. When we went to check-in we had a long wait as several international guests were checking in, and with their difficulties with english as well as the staff (eastern european) everyone seemed very confused! When we finally got to check-in it was a rather abrupt encounter and they didnt seem to care less. They were aware from contact with the hotel that it was a special occassion & of course that we had booked an upgraded room type, I dont expect to be grovelled over by any means but comman manners would of been nice!! We were handed our key and left to search for our room, no offer of help with our bags and there were not lifts available to our part of the hotel (not sure if there are in the other areas) we eventually gave up and asked a maid where our room was, to no avail (she didnt speak english) we finally found a gentleman who helped us and took us to our room. The room was freezing we ran around closing all the curtains trying to keep in some heat and turned on the radiators & fire, which i had to practically sit on to stop shivering. The room did look like the pictures, or it would have 10 years ago. I wasnt bothered that the room looked aged as this sometimes adds character & charm! I was disappointed that the room did not however have a shower, only a bath. Which I did not want to use as the water coming out the taps resembled pee!! I called the front desk to advise them of this discolouration & was advised in again a very abrupt manner that its because the pipes are old & rusty. You would think charging nearly £300 per night they would be able to rectify this?? We only ate once in the hotel which was a small snack on our day of arrival, we did not repeat the experience, it was not anything to write home about. I had also been impressed on-line by the "facilties" the hotel offered, swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna etc...
When we ventured to the pool & I was disgusted, it was located in the basement, tiles were chipped and missing, it was dirty and tiny! Scum was floating on the pool along with several old, used plasters. We only went to the pool the once, and I personally would have turned straight around & walked out but the ex-other half insisted on staying for a swim. I felt desperate for a good wash to scrub the filth off after this!
We had two nights here and I was glad when it came time to leave - with my purse £600 lighter I wish I had stayed at a travelodge as the experience would of probably been better!
Edinburgh however is a great city - JUST STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

Arrived from the Waverly Train station, took a cab to the Royal Terrace. If you don't have alot of luggage you can walk from the train station to the hotel. When you go expect to walk, alot. The hotel was just fine, the young men checking us in were very helpful. The room was very comfortable, newly re-done. Nice size room with nice beds, coffee and tea available. Very clean. only problem was the windows wouldn't stay open. No air condtioning, no computers available to use, phones didn't work well, only calls within the hotel. Our room was on the 2nd floor, easy by the stairs. The breakfast was great! Nice staff, good food. Princes street is only 10 minute walk, Royal Mile 10 minutes more. Buses are slow and confusing. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful, and up behind the hotel was a great walk to the top of Carlton Hill. I loved this place and all of Edinburgh. GO!

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in November and we must say the staff, room and hotel were fantastic, especially the staff very helpful, we upgraded to a deluxe double for £40 a night and it was well worth it the room was enormous and the bed amazing, huge and very comfortable, only slight problem was for dinner they were only offering pre theatre menu, 3 courses to chose from and swimming pool was quite cold but neither of these affected our stay.

I have just returned from a midweek break in this hotel.
We had very mixed experiences in this hotel.
The rooms were small but clean and modern.
The breakfast was a buffet style. It was cold and not very appetising.
The dining room staff were unhelpful and unfriendly.
The bread and croissants were stale.
We had a drink in the bar on the first day and the bar man was very friendly and nice - However - we had a drink on the second day and it was a different story. We were the only people in the bar so he wasnt busy. When we asked about local whisky, we found it difficult to understand his scottish accent, he spoke to us very rudely and told us it wasnt hard. I then asked him not to put ice in the whiskly. His reply was ' thats not hard either, I already asked if you wanted ice and you said no'. He was the most rude person I have ever come across. It was clear from his attitude that he did not like us -His name i think was Brian.
The hotel lobby and bar area was very cold. We asked for the heating to be turned on but that didnt happen.
I would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

We (4 adults) stayed at this hotel for two nights over August Bank Holiday to visit Edinburgh and the Tattoo. Our first impressions were of a sour receptionist who kept us waiting while she shuffled some paper around the desk - she then looked at us and told us to come back after 2pm (it was 1.15pm) as the rooms weren't ready. We went away wondering what we had come to, but on returning at 5pm it was a different story. A very helpful gentleman checked us in, arranged the bags and told us all the details about breakfast etc etc. The rooms (on the 2nd floor) and bathrooms were lovely and clean with a view over the Firth of Forth. The beds were extremely comfy with pristine sheets and the rooms had obviously been recently renovated. Breakfast was a class act -full Scottish in a buffet style along with plenty of choice of cereal, fruit and juices. The waitresses were attentive with tea and coffee in plentiful supply. We tried out the Leisure Club (pool, steam room and sauna) which was great and highly recommended after a day of walking around sight seeing. The location couldn't have been better, everything within walking distance but yet away from the hustle and bustle on a quiet street which itself is quite spectacular to look at. After our initial disappointment with the receptionist (we never saw her again) the staff couldn't have been more helpful - booking taxis, bus timetables and the Aussie in the bar was great!
Would highly recommend this hotel, but from previous comments, we think rooms on the first floor upwards are the best. Apparently the basement ones are not as good.

  • Liked — Location, room, Leisure Club, helpful staff.
  • Disliked — The rude receptionist who gave us a bad first impression!
