We have often visited Edinburgh Zoo and passed by the Holiday Inn and on occasion stopped in for a Sunday Lunch.

This year the kids were off for a few days and I decided to surf the net for any bargains.

I noticed the Holiday Inn here had a special offer on for bed and breakfast but I was unsure if they could accomodate us all (2 adults 3 children) in the one room. I felt the kids were too young to have their own room.

I phoned the hotel direct and spoke to a pleasant chap in reservations who told me it would be a bit cramped but they could fit us in.

We arrived and were met by pleasant staff at the front desk who provided us with keycards for our room.

We were on the fifth floor and there were 3 lifts and we never had any problems with them,.

Our room was big and we all fitted in no problem. It was clean, well furnished and decorated.

The kids( and me) loved it.

We had to book our time for the swimming pool as it was busy due to school holidays. The pool was great, although a bit small for the number of people using it.

I used the gym and it was well equipped and one of the best I've used.

We had dinner in the hotel and would recommend the carvery buffet. The food in the buffet was excellent and plenty of it. I would recommend this for the kids too as the kids menu is very limited. Our two youngest (5 and 3) had fish goujons and curly fries from the kids menu and when they arrived it looked as if they had been deep fried for 3 days!

The restaurant itself was clean, modern and well staffed. There was a 10% service charge which was added onto the bill which I felt was excessive as it was a self service buffet after all!

That night we slept well and the rooms air-conditioning and heating ensured everyone was comfortable.

There was a good choice of TV channels and Pay TV.

The next morning we had the buffet breakfast and again the buffet was delicious with the usual fried breakfast choices as well as fruits, cereals, croissants, etc.

We also had a late checkout with no problems and an accurate bill.

We normally use Hilton hotels for our short breaks but I would have no hesitation using this hotel or recommending it to anyone.

  • Liked — Overall quality and service, buffet, gym, room, location
  • Disliked — Having to book for pool, size of pool. 10% service charge on buffet

just got back from my 2 night stay.

First room we checked into 266 stunk of mold and must as soon as the door opened. Was too over powering so complained and the room was changed to further down the coridor 250. This room was fine apart from it was stone cold and the heat was not working. Maintanence was called but could not fix the problem. I phoned down to recpetion and nicely complained and was upgraded to executive room which was was appreciated.

Room was very clean and ok bathroom with very good power shower.

Buffet breakfast has everything you could ask for and what you expect for the price. Although at weekends if you prebook breakfast you can get a discount.

Location was good for us as we was spening on day in Edinburgh 4 miles away and also driving around to Stiring and areas. Good base.

Swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi well worth a visit.

There is no concierge here however the receptionist are meant to help out but they are not interested in helping you out much with regard to places of interest.

I stayed at the holiday in for 4 nights and was reasonably pleased with my stay.

Check in was efficient and the staff were pleasant. The room was a good size with a standard bathroom – no frills but more than adequate.

Breakfast was a good buffet with a large selection. I only eat dinner in the hotel once in the oriental restaurant and the food was ok (there is a better Chinese restaurant called the Manor House just a mile up the road towards the airport).

The location is about 3 miles from the airport and 4 mile from the city centre right next door to the Zoo. Buses run from outside and a cab to the centre will cost about £12, to the airport it was about £10.

Overall the Hotel was ok and I would stay here again if I needed to be in this part of Edinburgh.

I decided on this hotel mainly because most of the hotels near the city were booked out plus the fact that I was already familiar with the chain. Apart from the nonchalant front desk staff, service was just ok, nothing special. It was three of us, and through their website we managed to get a rate that included breakfast, which was satisfactory.....the usual anyway, but it was filling.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is next door to the zoo (open from 9-6) and on the bus route 12, 26 and 31 into the city, so transportation into town is good ( every 10-15 mins) without having to fight for parking there. Parking right outside the hotel entrance itself is tight but extra space is available further away from the main entrance.

The reception does not change money and unfortunately for us the ATM in the small lobby did not accept our card. As I understand it, the ATM does not accept many overseas cards. The banks would be your nearest exchange point . Internet is expensive but available.

The bathroom was not immaculate but it was fairly clean. More attention needed to be paid to the mould that was appearing in the basin area. The water pressure was quite heavy but I had a serious problem trying to get it to the right temperature. It was either blistering hot or icy cold. In trying to mix them, icy cold water came out one side and very hot water came out the other side of the spout. I didnt rinse off, I just dried off...much safer.

I would return if I didnt have a choice. I would however prefer to stay at another hotel.

For those interested, a short distance away from the hotel is a small snack place "Joe's 3 in 1" . It is near to the Haymarket Pub...I think its Morrison Road not very sure, BUT the prices are good and I found the service efficient. It is a tiny, cosy spot and if you drive too fast you will miss it. Joe and Donna are the friendly owners. They serve pizzas, kebabs and burgers.

Very friendly reception although bit slow at check in , Bar staff pretty clueless and mixed drinks orders up several times . Bedroom average all the usual things that you`d expect from a hotel of this standard and good clean bathroom . Holiday Inns are just bed factories and pretty souless places and this no exception but if you can get room for less than £100 its reasonable value for E`boro
