“Jolly Boys weekend @ the Rugby”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

Cracking weekend, apart from the score.

Stayed in the Travelodge Edinburgh Dreghorn. Close to 16 bus route into city, 5 - 10 mins walk. £1.40 into city one way, and taxi back @ 12:00 midnight gave change out of £15. So cannot complain. Breakfast next door in Little Chef so was fine really.

I read some other reviews on this place. guys it is a Travelodge, not Waldorf Astoria (@£200 a night). You get what you pay for. At least there is no parking charges as I have had to pay in Travelodge elsewhere. Costs were fine, all rooms etc. clean and really helpful staff.

Oh yes, slept like a baby, beds very comfortable.

Before I start to list my tales of woe I need to make it clear that we were fully aware that this is a budget hotel chain, we are also now aware that this hotel is 27 years old, that we booked this for convenience for visiting friends locally and not as a destination hotel, however, just because we only paid £34 for the room this doesn't mean that standards should be so low... In all honesty they should pay me to stay there, actually don't bother Travelodge there is not a chance in hell that we will ever stay here again, in fact Travelodge in general is now on our avoid avoid list!

There are good points that I have to raise as well. Firstly check in staff helpful, friendly, informative. We duly went up to our room, sniffing a smell that was getting stronger the closer we got to the room. Industrial febreeze type of smell which who knows what it was covering up! Room was a depressing combination of battleship grey ceiling, off white walls, off white blackout blind, pale wood surrounds and those type of lights that are used in tunnels for miners that collect available insect life. To be honest our complaints in general are not about the housekeeping it is the general maintenance and standards that are the issue. From the pillows that are not really pillows (the Saturday papers were thicker) to the lack of mattress protector (illegal?) to the sliver of soap that would take a layer of skin off if you dared to use it, to the years of rust around the bathroom grab rails, the open plug hole leading straight to the drain, the open extractor fan in the shower with 27 years of accumulated dust etc, the whole thing was awful! Carpet stained, blind stained, sofa really stained awful awful awful.

So unimpressed were we I went down to reception to ask to be moved to another room. No question, no excuses just a new key to an identical end room in every way except there was a plug hole protector, not as much rust, not nearly as smelly but not great and still no mattress protector or plumped up pillows. The towels were also threadbare and stained and with our own hospitality industry experience these should be sent as rejects to the linen provider laundry company.

That night thankfully we were at friends eating well and drinking, which dulled the pain of coming back to the cell, sorry room, although because of the smell I had opened the window and by now it was -5c and snowing, the heater was doing little to heat the room, the blackout blind was not blacking out anything round the edges and we decided that because there was no mattress protector we would sleep in our clothes. We had also taken a look at the duvet inside the cover, I shudder to think when this was last washed! Thankfully I had brought our pillows from home and by the time we made the decision to just go for it and get into bed meeting directly in the middle and having to scramble up hill to get out of the middle was actually a good thing thanks to the cold.

To be fair we slept better than we should have, I put this down to alcohol rather than a comfortable room Or bed experience. Husband was all for getting the hell away quickly but I wanted my money back, this was horrific and as I said earlier just because this is a budget hotel experience it doesn't mean it should be a nasty filthy experience! Thankfully the manager on reception (David?) was apologetic, helpful and interested in what we had to say.... I got the impression he hears it all the time and our refund was forthcoming immediately so I can't fault him on that. Apparently they are getting a refit this year but Travelodge are doing up the worst ones first and Dreghorn is not near the top of this list.... You have got to be kidding me!

Oh and previous reviewers who have said word to the effect of why not enjoy breakfast In The little chef next door.... Hmmmm NO WAY. Having seen the charming ladies of the night congregating the night before drinking their hot chocolate and grabbing punters as they walked past, the last thing we then needed was to sit eating a greasy breakfast next to a woman discussing her night time activities in the hotel we just stayed in. Horrific does not begin to describe how truly terrible this hotel really is. Call me a snob, I'm far from it, but I do want value for money and I do expect some kind of standard. The only good thing about this hotel is the staff.

Good location to get bus into city centre however rest of it goes dowb hill. windows poorly fitted and can hear all traffic from bypass and the petrol station next door. Also an alarm of some sort went off most of the night from the building!
Pillows were pointless and parts of the room were damaged. However it was a very cheap option but still expected better.

I stayed here just one night and was really worried with all the bad press I'd read. There was no need to be however, as I think some people expect too much. This is budget accommodation, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Pleasant staff, warm clean rooms, a comfortable bed with clean sheets & bathroom, oh and a TV that works. I'm sorry if this offends the more discerning out there, but I couldn't fault it. No complaints what so ever and overall, a good nights sleep in a really handy location.

Note:
If you enjoy a decent breakfast, Immediately adjacent the front door is a Little Chef.
Also, the by pass can be quite noisy, it didn't bother me at all, but if you're a light sleeper ask for a room facing the car park.
Finally, there is a park and ride (free parking) a short drive East away on A720 by pass (5 mins). Come off at the Straighton junction, and the car park is 400 yds South (on the right) Its clearly signposted.

We stayed 2 nights. The room was a double room. Excellent cleanliness however could do with modernisation. Staff were very helpful providing fresh towels coffee/tea etc. Only fault was the manager at reception was quite abrupt towards her staff shouting in the corridor did wake us early. I would be happy to use this hotel again great location and easy commuting to the city center.

Stayed here for 5 nights for new years 2012. The staff were very friendly and more then happy to help, and the room was clean. Extra pillows were brought to room when requested, as well as towels, tea and coffee.
Its a 5min walk to bus stop which is 30mins into city centre, which is 1.40 for a single but if you intend to get more then 3 buses get a day ticket for 3.50.
Morrison is also a 5 mins walk and so is the hunters tryst pub which does good family food.
The only down side was the elephant in the room above, and a little noise from the bypass

Room Tip: Avoid little chef next door staff are slow and rude

It's what you expect from a Travelodge, cheap and cheerful! The hotel it's self is a bit 'tired' but for Edinburgh on new years eve it was well worth the money. Good location, only 10 mins drive in to the centre of Edinburgh.
What makes this hotel is the staff. We booked 5 family rooms months ago for New years eve. But when we had the chance to go a day earlier we rang the Travelodge direct and as we were worried that we would have to change rooms the next night. We were also advised by the central booking line that there were only 3 family rooms left. When we spoke to the lodge direct they advised us that we would be able to keep the same room over 2 nights and that they would 'sort' the family rooms. When we got there on the Sunday night there were 5 family rooms all next to each other. Well done!!! This made our stay alot easier.
The staff were great the whole stay. A girl on reception gave us loads of information and made it easier to enjoy our New year celebration in Edinburgh.
