Cannot comment on the hotel as only visited the restaurant and bar, which is typical Wetherspoons formula stuff.
Food good value for money, but bar dingy, lacking character and atmosphere. Mixed bar service and unfriendly door staff ensure this is not a relaxing night out, especially toward closing time. Drink up shout two minutes after the bell !
Not a friendly place, in a district sadly lacking in good quality bars, only a couple worth visiting in the area. If you like the Wetherspoons formula this place will be familiar. Like many others I have been in, from Henley on Thames to Aberdeen, only a little darker. At least some of them are in grand old buildings that have been well converted. But this place make you yearn for the days when there was a little individuality around the UK.
Sure there were plenty bad places then and groups like Wetherspoons do offer reasonable standard consistency, but why bother coming to Edinburgh for the same experience you can get at home? There are many other bars in Edinburgh that offer a much better all round experience, many with a real local twist and genuine friendly service culture.
