We were orginally booked into the Guest House but due to renovation we were changed to this hotel which is run and owned by the same people. We were given an upgrade to our room with no extra cost to our original booking. From the time of booking until check out we received excellent, friendly and informative service. We were provided with local and transport information and, if the receptionists didn't know something, they took the trouble to find out and get back to us. The hotel has just been reburbished and a small bit of painting and decorating was still going on when we arrived. However, this did not get in the way of our stay at all and every attempt was made by the hotel to provide us with a relaxing and comfortable stay. The room was big but cosy and the bathroom had everything in it that you would want, including a power shower and a demisting mirror. There was a flat screen HD TV and an ipod/radio alarm. The bed was very comfortable and the garden view lovely. We had a very good meal in the hotel's bistro (Gabbro) and the breakfasts were varied and well cooked. They cooked porridge every day for me at my request and the service was quick, very polite and friendly. The hotel is about 20 minute walk from Princes street (a must for shopping) but the route is direct and full of shops along the way. Should walking not be your thing, the buses are all very clean and very regular. The Royal Mile is a must and if you do go then we would recommend The World's End pub/restaurant. The atmosphere is lovely, the service brilliant and the food (including the Haggis) was great....we went back it was so good. We also went to Ryan's (off Princes Street) which is an old wine cellar and is brilliant as some of the tables are in the old cask alcoves and so very private and romantic. Just around the corner from the hotel is a fabulous Thai restaurant called The Wild Elephant , which we would definitely recommend. All in all we had a fantastic 4 day trip and our stay at the Salisbury just added to our enjoyment. We are going back to Edinburgh this year and will definitely be staying at the hotel then. We have also recommended it to friends already.
