“5 star?...more like 3 star”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2007

My husband and I stayed in the Balmoral for 4 nights as a romantic city break, we were really looking forward to it, but felt like we ended up with the cheap seats...we needed the air conditioning on (which was noisy) as the room was like an oven, when we opened the window (over the courtyard) it must have been over some vents as that was noisy too.

The bathroom was rundown, with a shower curtain over the bath...not what we expected from a five star hotel, and the room was average. The housekeeping staff were very good.

Apart from paying 700 sterling for 4 nights for room only, we had to pay 25 sterling for parking per day and when I logged on the internet to check my bank account after all that, it cost me 6.50!

The main area of the hotel is one big hall of a lobby, the bar was what you'd expect to find in any average hotel and overall the hotel lacked atmosphere, its a beautiful building on the outside, but lacks character in the interior.

It is in a very central location, all the staff were nice...but overall we were disappointed with our stay and would not recommend it.

Dear Balmoral Guest,

I am sorry to learn of your disappointment with the hotel and your poor impressions about the general atmosphere.

Although hospitality and attention to detail are normally something that we do very well it would seem that we are not doing enough in other areas. We will indeed focus our attention in this direction.

I hope that you do not allow this one visit to spoil your overall impression of the Rocco Forte collection.

In the meantime if I may be of any further assistance to you now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely.

I guess that I can't really comment on the rooms, as after waiting to get two rooms they said were available, the front desk staff was never able to check us in after an hour of waiting. Glad we left.
Stayed at the Marriott Resort just out of town and saved over 500pounds. Way overpriced for incompetent service.

Elegant, with great restaurants and a really neat Pub. Breakfast is wonderful. Centrally located at the East end of the main street, Princes Street. A short walk to the Castle and Princes Gardens, home of the great Floral Clock.

We booked this hotel for a couple of nights for our wedding anniversary. We specifically asked for a quiet room but they put us in one overlooking the kitchen extractor fans. It was impossible to sleep in the room as it was noisy 24/7. The room was OK but not worth the £200 a night.

Also, the room was not made up until mid-afternoon and then we kept getting room service knocking on the door for no apparent reason - which just got irritating after the third time within 2 hours.

The location is fantastic being right in the centre of Edinburgh and very near the bus stop for the airport. We ate in the restaurant which again was expensive for what it was.

We definitely wouldn't stay here again.

My husband and I celebrated our silver wedding anniversary at the Balmoral, We wish we had not.
We have stayed in a lot of Rocco Forte Hotels, The Lowry, St Davids Spa etc and was expecting the room to be the same Five Star quality.
But even though I paid extra for an executive room we were really disappointed.
The view out of our windows was horrid!! It was like prison walls.
The room was very bland and deffinitely not worth £240 a night.
We used the swimming pool, but the lights in the showers were not all working and there was a terrible smell in the steam room and showers.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location and pleasant staff.

We stayed there for two nights over the May Day bank holiday.

This is a true "Grand Hotel". The location is probably unbeatable. It is within walking distance of anywhere you'd really want to visit on a weekend break.

The staff are attentive, very helpful and welcoming. They are just what you would expect from a good five star hotel, with added warmth. The rooms aren't massive, but they are well laid out and appointed.

We stayed on the fourth floor- the website we booked through allowed us to specify a room on one of the upper floors. The hotel is on a very busy junction in the city centre and we had no problems at all with the noise, though this may not be the case on some of the lower floors. You may wish to factor this in when booking.

There is a Michelin starred restaurant in the basement. It is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an absolutely outstanding restaurant with well informed and friendly staff. We'd have no hesitation in recommending it for a special occasion. If you're unsure, you can see the menu on the street entrance to the resaurant to the right of the main hotel entrance to see if it is to your taste.

Family get together in Edinburgh as our son works in London and our daughter in Prague.

We chose the Balmoral as a central point with regards flights for our off-spring and my Wife and I wanted a break from cooking etc...

We couldnt have asked for anything better, the concierge, reception and restaurant manager could not do enough to help us.

Only one gripe is that housekeeping knocked our door at 8.30am on a Sunday to see if we had vacated the room, not I.

Worth the money.

  • Liked — first class customer service and rooms
  • Disliked — need to train housekeeping to respect time of day
