I associated the Rocco Forte hotel chain always with outrageous pricing, so I was eager to find out what is special with this hotel chain. The Balmoral is the flagship of Edinburgh's hotel and is a typical grand hotel, nothing less, but nothing more.
Location is certainly best in town, but there are other luxury hotels with a similar location (Radisson, Scotsman, Carlton).
The rooms are not special. Decoration is a matter of taste, here it is a combination of green, brown and beige. The bathrooms are brand new and nice.
The spa and pool area is o.k., but way beneath the standard that has been set by German luxury hotels.
Breakfast is expensive and simply not 5-star-level.
We had dinner at Number One Restaurant. The food was certainly good, but we were somewhat disappointed, because the tasting menu we took was 100% French, nothing Scottish. And, to be frank, it would not have gotten a Michelin star in France, where we know dozens of non-star restaurants serving a more innovative cuisine. BTW, the restaurant was pricey, especially the wines. A wine with a retail price of 3 lbs was sold at 26 lbs, a wine with a retail price of 5 lbs at 40 lbs!
Value: We paid 135 lbs for the room plus 32 lbs for breakfast (16 lbs per person) and 25 lbs for parking (per day, not per week!). This was in the range of the other Edinburgh luxury hotels.
Conclusion: Do NOT believe in Sir Rocco Forte's marketing phrases ("3rd best hotel of the world" etc.). It's just an average 5-star-hotel. Nothing less, nothing more.
