The hotel itself is a landmark in Edinburgh and its beauty is unquestionable. What really makes the hotel unique is the exceptionally high standard of customer service. All the hotel staff are genuinely friendly and will go out of their way to help (not unfortunately like most other hotels where I've encountered everything from moodiness to arrogance).
On this particular occasion we were staying at the hotel to celebrate my mother in law's 70th birthday. I had written to the hotel asking for help from the train with our luggage. Even though our train was slightly late arriving into the station, the doorman was waiting for us. He had 2 taxis standing by - one to take us to the hotel and one for himself and the luggage. This same doorman remembered our names the next day - I was really impressed. Other highlights included:
~ The 'Welcome to the Balmoral' greeting we received from both the door staff and reception staff is a lovely touch.
~ Although check in is 2pm we were able to check into one of our rooms immediately on arrival - at 11.30am.
~ From the moment we arrived we did not have to carry our luggage. These are looked after straight away and brought up to the hotel room.
~ Both our rooms had stunning view of Edinburgh's Old Town and Arthurs Seat. The bed was extremely comfortable and the turndown service went as far as replacing some of the toiletries we had used while getting ready for our evening in Edinburgh.
~ Lunch at Hadrians was delicious. We had to wait a while for our starters which apparently had to be cooked again. The manager notified us of this (we hadn't even noticed). He was really apologetic and said we could have either complimentary deserts of a bottle of wine. This was without us complaining.
~ The pool is stunning and there is a drinks bar where you can help yourself to complimentary fruit juice, water, tea and coffee. It's so relaxing and again, the spa staff are outstanding.
~ Breakfast is pricy at £18.50 but the quality is excellent. There is a member of staff (Sandra I think) who makes guests feel really welcome.
~ Afternoon tea at Palm Court is a must. It is sheer elegance and the live harpist made the atmosphere unique
I could go on and on about this hotel. Yes it is a little more expensive than other hotels in Edinburgh - but the experience is definitely worth it.
