“Old world elegance in peaceful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2009

We were in a suite for 5 nights and enjoyed every moment! The suite was huge and had a very large bathroom (heated towel racks). We had room service for breakfast every morning and it was delicious. The suite included a large sitting area with dining table -- really everything we could ask for. The staff was very nice. The location was away from the noise and crowds. We will definately stay there again.

We spent 4 nights at the Edinburgh Residence on our recent vacation in Scotland. The hotel is nicely situated in a quiet well kept residential area in the West End, and is within a pleasant 10-15 walk of the Royal Mile. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a sitting area, breakfast table, a nice flat panel TV, and a spacious well appointed bathroom. Nice powerful shower in a separate stall, large white towels. Water heat is individually controlled in the rooms. Very comfortable bed, and quiet room. We slept well each night, despite our initial jetlag.

The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. We had some issues with the wireless internet, which were always promptly addressed. The reception staff were helpful with transportation details, and arranging a tour of the highlands for us. There is a guestbook in the reception area listing many good restaurants close by, with reviews posted by former guests. We found this very helpful in making reservations.

We had a very enjoyable afternoon tea on the day of our arrival. The hotel has a drawing room with a bar. Breakfast is promptly delivered to the guest rooms each morning, and we enjoyed this aspect of our stay.

Overall, we had a delightful stay, and we would certainly recommend the Edinburgh residence to visitors looking for a quiet and elegant place to stay.

The Edinburgh Residence is perfectly situated in a quiet georgian crescent a short walk from the royal mile. The large suites are well appointed but a little worn around the edges. Staff were helpful and the car parking service was a plus. Breakfast was average quality but included. For £155 good value for a city centre location.

Stayed for one night through booking.com and saved quite a considerable amount on the going rate. We paid £95 and the website says rooms between £255-£350!
We thought this hotel was unique in that you had a microwave, fully stocked fridge at reasonable prices, full set of crockery and utensils, tea and coffee facilities with a percolator!
The room we stayed in was a classic room which was huge, yet on the website it is stated as being one of their smaller ones!
Staff here are excellent, and the parking service was also excellent, our car was parked for us and left in a secure parking area at the back of the hotel, and brought to the front door for us on departure.
It is an easy ten minute walk to Princess Street.
The breakfast was delicious, full marks to the chef here, porridge, fruit, full Scottish breakfast tea coffee toast! we could hardly move after eating all this, and the beauty of this hotel it is brought to your room! almost like having your own private butler!
This is where the microwave is handy if you happen to be coming out the shower and need a few moments to get yourself dressed, you can heat it up there and then, excellent idea as i was in the shower when ours came and thats what i did.
The bathroom is huge!! robes and slippers along with toiletries are available also. clean towels all fluffy and white, we could not fault this hotel in fact we loved it so much whenever we are going through to Edinburgh on a city break we will book this place.
As they were just two of us in our party the room was sufficient for all our needs, but have look at their website they have other rooms which have a full lounge in them and dining area.
We could not find any fault with this hotel if anything we loved it so much we cant wait to go back!
Go book this place especially if you get a chance to take advantage of the reduced rates on some of the websites, well worth every penny we thought.

Impressed prior to checking in, we were upgraded to a grand suite for the price of a classic suite as they advertised availability of a classic suite on the internet and had none available.

Room spacious, clean and very well decorated. Complimentary bottle of wine and chocolates on arrival, excellent breakfast in the morning. Free parking at the rear of the building saves constant meter feeding or cat and mouse games with the traffic wardens.

Staff very helpful particularly on Sunday morning when we asked to see a townhouse suite, as we may return with our two children next time. On the other hand we may just treat ourselves again and leave them with friends.

Overall a wonderful anniversary weekend during the festival.

In a nutshell, poorly managed hotel and not worth the price. My run down of my hotel experience in no particular order.

CLEANLINESS- In the walk in cupboard, there was a huge long hair visible on the floor. Under the pull out sofa, lots of dirt. It was clear that no one had taken the trouble to move the sofa and vacuum underneath. Lazy cleaners, poor supervision and zero management.

THINGS THAT DON’T WORK-Each room has its own tv decoder. So you have to figure out two remotes. One for tv and one for tv decoder. One of the remotes had dead batteries. It took us 30 mins to figure that out! This should have been checked before our room was released to us. Also, the remotes didn’t work unless one was right in front of the tv. So one would need to get out of your chair to change the channel. Most annoying for a hotel with a high room rate. Also, the bathroom extractor fan was linked to the bathroom light and it would go off 30 mins after one switches the light off. Very annoying when one is trying to go to sleep. Also, the weather was warm and one of the radiators was on. I tried unsuccessfully to switch it off. I asked reception to ensure that the radiators were all off when I left in the morning and in the evening when I returned, the radiator was still blaring. No note from the reception with an update. I asked reception again and they sent someone to the room who was unable to rectify.

FOOD-On the first night we ordered fish cakes for the kids, a steak for me and a noodle dish for my wife. The beef quality was poor - sad since the quality of beef in Scotland is so high. The fish cakes were 90% potato and 10% fish. Shocking. And to top it off, the order was delivered one hour after ordering. For a hotel with only twenty some rooms, this is shocking. When we asked about the fish cakes and if they come with anything like veggies etc, they said they don’t know. However, the banofee pudding was excellent. We had planned to order this dish again on the last night, but sadly the menu had room service changed without notice. What a shame. The breakfasts were fine though.

SERVICE- Weak. I guess the expectation of service is correlated to the room rate. Paying 280 pounds per night, my expectations were high. The one hour story for room service was the first issue (described above) . One night two, we ate out ofcourse. On return, I ordered a beer. One hour later no beer. So I looked in the fridge and took out a beer I dislike but as I didn’t have any choice, I drank it nonetheless. I cancelled the order for the beer explaining that 1 hour is a little long to wait.

The turn down service was done differently each night. The first night, no turn down. The second night they asked whether we want turn downand we said no. The third night they did turn down and left duvets form kids bedroom neat. The fourth night no turn down and they didn’t make the kids beds!

We were leaving early Thursday morning so I went to reception Wednesday evening to ask to checkout. The receptionist asked me to come back in one hour saying he wasn’t ready and needed to include the charges for the last night. Shocking! I asked for a wake up call at 6 and was awoken at 545am! All requests go thru reception- room service, check out, check in, concierge, wake up call, maintenance. They also deliver room service. Ridiculous. No wonder that room service comes in 1 hr! They probably do the cooking as well! The only exception to this poor record was a gentleman at reception from Eastern Europe who was very helpful. My son banged his head on the side of the wobbly bed and needed ice urgently. The receptionist was very helpful with this.

MANAGEMENT: On the second to last night, at 430am, the fire alarm went off. Out the entire hotel went onto the road, some without shirts, others with bags packed- quite a sight! A false alarm, so back to bed we went. In the morning, I asked why the alarm went off. They said it was some dust in the smoke detector. But one would expect a hotel of this standing to have a maintenance programme that included servicing (blowing dust) from the detectors? I expected a rate reduction, written apology but absolutely nothing. Shocking. Absolutely shocking.

Also, we had booked a massage that we were unable to do givena conflict with a fringe show we had booked later on and we gave 12 hours notice. They said this was insufficient and charged us the full amount of the massage (80 pounds). We asked them if we could reschedule and they said they would let us know. We never heard anything further on the subject. Shocking!

There have to be better places to stay.

I would like to thank our guest for his honest feedback about his experience. This enables me to respond to the satisfaction of all our guests.

I am also not going to make any excuses for any of the issues raised and will act on his comments as a matter of urgency.

I also have to state my deepest disappointment that I was not made aware of any of the comments during our guest stay. Each guests satisfaction is important to us and especially myself, as we provide a service and standard that should reflect the values of our company.

The only area I would like to respond to was the incorrect information provided regarding the cause of the fire alarm. The fire alarm was set off due to a faulty detector and not dust. To rectify this, the system maintenance will be done on Monday 17th of August. The system is cleaned and tested on a weekly basis.

Once again my sincere apologies to our guest and a personal response will also be sent to our guest direct.

Stayed for one night as a birthday present from my other half in July.
The room was perfectly clean and tidy, with a huge comfy bed.

The bathroom really topped it off though, it was huge with a whirlpool bath!
Fantastic for relaxing in!

The only grumble I do have is that when we arrived they couldn't find our booking.
It turned out that they'd got the dates wrong and booked it for the night after... this took a little while to sort out, but it was in the end.
But just double check your dates on the confirmations that get sent back to you...

And enjoy!
