Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“Holyrood palace was beautifully preserved”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

I loved being able to walk the same floors that historical figures walked. The Scots have done a marvelous job of preserving history as it occurred. Well worth the price of admission.

“One of the iconic buildings in Edinburgh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We visited this palace with our free pass from the hop on and hop off busses. The bus drops you more of less at the door and after a short walk through a lovely courtyard we entered the palace, steeped in Scottish history. We visited the room belonging to Mary Queen of Scots and learned about it's gruesome past.

It is definitely well worth a visit and I would recommend the hop on hop off bus service for those who don't fancy the uphill walk back to central Edinburgh.

“A living, working palace with tons of information”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Unlike so many European palaces of times past, this is a current palace of the Royal Family. It's fascinating history (i.e.: the Abbey) and current use (annual tea) give it something special, almost intangible. Though the current private apartments are not accessible, many of the historic rooms (ie: Mary Queen of Scots' boudoir and the room where her Italian secretary was killed) and the public rooms (ie: great hall and the throne room) provide a great insight into the palace and its history. Tour the grounds, abbey and inside to get a nice depth of information.

“For royalty and history buffs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

The audio tour of the palace is informative and interesting. It taked the visitors through a few rooms, some of them are still used by the royal family when they visit.

“Enjoyable visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Enjoyable tour with plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions you may have. I was disappointed that you could not take photographs inside the building and I'm not sure why. It wasn't too busy when we visited at about 1030 on a Saturday morning but I understand it gets busier later in the day. I wouldn't recommend it as a place to visit with young children. I'm sure anyone with an interest in history would enjoy a visit.
