Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“Enjoyable visit to Holyrood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

It was a bit drizzly the day we went, but it cleared up so we could walk the gardens. So pretty! The tour itself was interesting and the abbey ruins were beautiful.

“Royal Garden Party”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

We had great difficulty getting even close to getting in the traffic was terrible we got a taxi but he had to let us out about quarter of a mile away for the traffic and the crowds. To make it worst it was pouring with rain,we had to go tonthe South Gate and again a lot of walking but when we did get in. It is a magnificent building. The only thing I would say is go by car my husband walked back to Princess St in the rain and it took him over a hour.he saw no buses near the Place and the taxis wouldn't stop

we enjoyed this historic spot; we did not take the Abbey tour, but the palace garden and abbey ruins are worth seeing.

“A nice way to explore Scottish history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

I must say I fell in love with Scotland, everything about it is wonderful. Holyrood was a lovely way to spend a few hours wandering through the palace, looking at the artwork and imagining what really went on within the walls.

I visited alone and it would have been nice to visit with friends so I could have taken more pictures. The courtyard is wonderful too. I thought it was definitely worth the money,

“Beautiful gardens and lovely palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Being a "working" palace, made Holyrood all the more interesting. An audio guide explained not only the palace's history, but how the rooms are used when the Queen is in residence today. A beautiful palace with wonderful gardens that are well worth a stroll, even in inclement weather. The remains of the old Abbey are still quite atmospheric.
The ticket included a visit to the Queen's Gallery, in which there was a very interesting photographic exhibition entitled Cairo to Constantinople - well worth the visit.
