“Well worth the trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

In Edinburgh castle you get to walk round a lot of rooms full of stuff and it's great, Craigmillar is really just a shell with empty rooms but it has a really nice charm to it and I think the price of entry (£5) is fair.

Went on a rainy day in August and there weren't many people, had a really good time just wandering around this old castle, reading a little bit about the history and getting images in my mind of what it would have been like back in the day.

Went to Gilmerton Cove straight after and thought it was a really nice combo to do.

“Unexpected late Medieval Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

This is a fantastic late medieval castle in a fairly out of the way corner of Edinburgh - let's face it there's not a great deal else that's going to entice you to visit Craigmillar - but it's well worth making the effort. Families will enjoy exploring the corridors dungeons, spiral staircases and largely intact central keep and amateur antiquarians will have an equally good time, especially if you pick up a guide at the shop before going in. As is so often the case the fact that it's a bit out of the way is a huge boon as you might very well have the run of the place, particularly if you visit during the week. Combine a visit with a walk up Arthur's Seat and lunch at the Sheep's Heid in Duddingston for a cracking day out.

“A real one, from the medieval time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

We visited this site in October 2012. The staff was very polite. This is a place where you can feel the medieval lifestyle, you can see the big fireplaces for heating rooms of stones. The trees in the courtyard are very interesting. For kids- is it like a labirint to explore From the rooftop view of 360 degrees, worth seeing.

“If you love exploring ruins......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

.....you'll LOVE Craigmillar Castle. So many rooms and chanbers and ante chambers and staircases and pokey wee places to investigate. I love looking up all the chimneys especially when the fireplace is big enough to stand inside. It's great fun to explore as a child and the lovely grassy area within the curtain wall is ideal for family picnics. You can also climb high up on the walls for a great view around Edinburgh. I can't recommend Craigmillar Castle highly enough.

“Three miles from the Old Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Yet a completely different setting from the somewhat overrun Edinburgh Castle. A visit to Craigmillar Castle is capable of being quiet and even bucolic, yet resounds with the intrigue of its association with Mary, Queen of Scots. Exploring its deserted chambers, and enjoying the views from the roof, are always a pleasure.
